I am a population geneticist driven by a central question: what are the mechanistic processes that generate evolutionary change, and how can we integrate disciplines to reconstruct the past with greater resolution? To achieve this, I work at the forefront of evolutionary genetics, spanning demographic inference, comparative genomics and natural selection, and drawing on both modern and ancient DNA to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. I am particularly interested in the power of genetic data to reveal hidden chapters of human evolution, disentangle the dynamics of domestication, inform conservation practices and reconstruct ancient ecosystems. By combining genomic data with archaeology, palaeoanthropology, ecology and computational modelling, I aim to move beyond single-discipline narratives and build integrative frameworks that provide a more complete understanding of evolutionary history. My academic training laid the foundations for this interdisciplinary perspective. I completed a BSc in Biology (2009) and an MSc in Forensic Genetics (2011) at the University of Porto, before undertaking a PhD in Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (2011–2016). During my doctoral research, supervised by Prof. Aida Andrés and Prof. Svante Pääbo (Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2022), I investigated comparative genomics and natural selection in great apes. I subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at Institut Pasteur (2016–2017) with Prof. Luis Quintana-Murci, focusing on the evolution of human immunity, followed by research at the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (2018–2021), where I studied Denisovan admixture and human evolutionary history using ancient genomics. Interdisciplinarity is central to my scientific vision. I seek not only to apply genomic tools to diverse systems, but to help establish new paradigms that bridge across research fields and foster genuinely holistic perspectives on evolution. From 2022 to 2025, I served as Deputy Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Coimbra (CEIS20-UC), strengthening cross-disciplinary research initiatives. I currently hold a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award and a Discovery Project funded by the Australian Research Council, supporting my work within the Evolution of Cultural Diversity Initiative at the Australian National University. Since 2025, I lead the research group Ancient DNA & Population Genomics at BIOPOLIS–CIBIO (University of Porto), where I am building an internationally oriented programme at the interface of ancient DNA, population genomics and evolutionary theory.
