Helena Bártolo is a Professor in Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic of Leiria (PIL), Portugal. She holds a PhD degree in Construction Management from the University of Reading UK, a Master in Structural Engineering from the University of Porto and a Licenciatura (5 year) from the University of Coimbra, both from Portugal. She got a NATO fellowship to undertake PhD studies in the United Kingdom. Helena is a member of the Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design (CIAUD) from the University of Lisbon, and was a founding member of the PIL Centre on Rapid and Sustainable Product Development. She was Director of the School of Technology from the Polytechnic Institute of Cavado and Ave (IPCA), Barcelos, Portugal. She is author and co-author of more than 80 scientific articles published in peer review scientific journal, books, conference proceedings, and served as referee for international peer review journals, namely Automation in Construction, Virtual and Physical Prototyping, Energy and Buildings and Construction Management & Engineering. She has experience in supervising master, doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well in participating on fundamental and applied research projects funded by the European Commission, the Portuguese Innovation Agency, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Portuguese Institute for SMEs (IAPMEI), as well as the Industry. She was Conference Chair in several International Conferences, namely the first edition of the International Conference on Sustainable Smart Manufacturing (S2M 2016), and the two editions of the International Conference on Sustainable Intelligent Manufacturing International Conference (SIM 2013 and SIM 2011), and member of the Scientific Committee of several international Conferences. She was also a member of the Organizing Committee of several international Conferences, such as the 2nd edition of the International Conference on Sustainable Smart Manufacturing (S2M 2019) in Manchester, UK, and several editions (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013) of the Advanced International Conference Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP). She has also organized several national and international symposiums, workshops and seminars. She is a member of several international construction networks, such as INTBAU (International Network for traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism). She was also a member of ARCOM (Association of Researchers for Construction Management), CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction), DRS (Design Research Society) and AKPIA (Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture). Her main research interests are sustainable construction, sustainable green materials, bio-inspired materials, circular construction, smart materials for construction, and advanced additive manufacturing processes, such as 3D printing technologies.
