Isabel Sousa is a pre-Bologna Chemistry graduate (2005) and MSc in Science Food and Technology (2007) from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto. In 2013 she obtained her PhD degree in Chemistry Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, where she synthesized drug-metal complexes and implemented a new method for their encapsulation in liposomes as drug delivery systems, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Paula Gameiro. In 2013, she joined SECOP (Surface Engineering and Corrosion Protection Group) at CICECO-UA, as a post-doc, where she used her expertise in encapsulation techniques to explore new alternatives for the controlled release of active species in paper tissue applications (https://goo.gl/R6sRSD) and food packaging (NANOBARRIER, 2015, https://goo.gl/PqqB3A) while simultaneously, working on corrosion sensing and corrosion protection. In 2016, in MAGICOAT project, she began to explore new alternatives for the controlled release of active species in corrosion protection and development of new coatings for Mg alloys using her extensive background in encapsulation and natural materials. The researcher has a strong academic and scientific background in Chemistry. Since the beginning of her scientific career, she has worked in different scientific areas, from the interaction of antimicrobial agents with mimetic models of biological membranes (drug transport systems), to the preparation of bone cements to capsules for the application of dyes in the textile industry, always focusing her interest in the development of materials (liposomes, capsules) for the encapsulation of active species. Her interdisciplinary skills provided her with versatility and ability to tackle, quickly and successfully, a wide range of topics (chemistry, colloidal and materials science and nanotechnology). From 2014-2018 she was WP2 leader in SMARCOAT project - Development of Smart Nano and Microcapsulated Sensing Coatings for improving of Material Durability / Performance, within the scope of the Marie Curie MSCA-RISE-2014 actions, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) - (Grant Agreement: 645662). In 2018 she received a best oral presentation award at the 5th International Conference on Materials Science & Smart Materials (MSSM2018) in Scotland. In 2019 she obtained a researcher contract in the frame of DL57 (BPD/UI50/6577/2016). Since 2019, she has been teaching 1st year and master¿s disciplines at DEMAC-UA. In 2019, she was invited to participate in the Science is Wonderful Exhibition, in Brussels, by Dr. Olga Kazcerewska (the winner of the presentation slot), a former Marie Curie Fellow at CICECO/DEMAC. Besides contributing to high-quality research papers, she has been the lead researcher for the development of micro/nanocapsules loaded with active species in several projects (see CV) participating both in experimental and managements tasks, contributing to the success of colleagues, partner companies and scientific breakthroughs. In addition to her scientific work, IS has supervised (2018, 2022) Erasmus+ PhD internships M. Pakiet (0000-0003-3370-1164) and K. Štepánková (0000-0001-5290-3330), (2021) a MSc thesis (Evaluation of in vitro biocompatibility of functionalized magnesium alloys for application in orthopedic implants), two 2-month master students internship (2021), co-supervised 2 Erasmus students (2019) and supervised Dr. O. Kaczerewska (851D-56EA-C6E2) on her early work in nanomaterial synthesis. She has participated in international mobility, in both academic and industrial research facilities, with 4 scientific stays (2016) at Belarus State University (2) and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon (2) and 1 scientific stay in 2017 in SYNPO.Currently, she is supervising 4 MSc students, 2 as co-supervisor with colleagues from DEMaC and CESAM.
