Joana Catela obtained a bachelor's degree in Anthropology at FCSH-NOVA, an MPhil in Latin American Studies from the University of Cambridge and a post-graduate certificate in Anthropology of Health from ISCTE-IUL. In 2018 she was awarded a PhD in Anthropology (ISCTE-IUL), after conducting an intensive ethnographic fieldwork in a social housing neighbourhood on the outskirts of Lisbon. Joana Catela joined the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS) University of Lisbon as a Post-Doctoral Researcher to support project "exPERts: Making sense of planning expertise: housing policy and the role of experts in the Programa Especial de Realojamento (PER)" in 2018. She conducted a multi-sited ethnography in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) focused both on the enactment of municipal workers' expertise and on the effects of PER in the rehoused community. In July 2020, Joana Catela joined the international project "SPLACH - Spatial Planning for Change" (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016431) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. This project was based at Dinâmia'CET, ISCTE-IUL and financed by European Structural and Investment Funds (FEEI). It focused on generating a body of transformative policies to support the transition to a more sustainable food system. Due to the sanitary restrictions imposed by the pandemic, Joana conducted a remote and digital ethnographic research with producers and distributors of food baskets in the LMA, to contribute to a better understanding of urban planning and the current food system. Joana Catela rejoined ICS in 2021 as a Postdoctoral Researcher working for project "CLAN: Children-animals friendships: challenging boundaries between humans and non-humans in contemporary societies" (PTDC/SOC 28415/2017). Her contribution for this project focused on examining the employment of visual methods to uncover the hybrid worlds children and their pets are already embedded in. As a post-doc researcher, Joana published co-authored articles, but also my her ethnographic research. The results were presented in national and international conferences, which offered her the opportunity to meet colleagues with similar research interests and to further develop these relationships. She has also been invited to teach different subjects: methods and techniques in social research, anthropology and development, animals and health, and digital methodologies. Her participation in the European Researcher's Night in 2020 testifies to her engagement with civil society, which runs in parallel with her concern in delivering research for evidence-based public policy. From 2021 to 2022, she also served as co-convenor for the Urban Transitions HUB at ICS and as consultant for the Aga Khan Foundation DiversITy project, a health literacy participatory project with immigrants. As for her experience outside academia, she worked at Estrela's Parish Council, where she was responsible for developing projects with local stakeholders. Now, Joana Catela teaches at a TEIP school - which stands for Educational Territory of Priority Intervention -, located in a disadvantaged area in Lisbon. This programme focuses on reducing absenteeism, indiscipline, and violence, and promoting educational success for its students. She is also Invited Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
