Ana Sofia Sousa is a PhD candidate in Biotechnology at CBQF-ESB/UCP and i3S/Ipatimup, supported by an individual fellowship from FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). Her research focuses on developing multifunctional microparticles for targeted therapies in intestinal inflammatory diseases. She combines expertise in gut microbiota modulation, bioactive delivery systems, nanotechnology, and cell culture models to create innovative solutions for gastrointestinal health. In parallel with her PhD, Sofia actively contributes to the gBiOT project (reference 2022.02926.PTDC; DOI: 10.54499/2022.02926.PTDC), where she is developing a biocatalytic polymeric nanobot to modulate the gut microbiota and deliver therapeutic bioactives such as phenylethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC). Early in her PhD, she completed a research secondment at Bioinicia S.L. and AITA (Valencia, Spain) under the FODIAC Project (H2020 MSCA-RISE-2017 — Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange), where she had the opportunity to produce bioactive-loaded microparticles using electrospinning technology. She holds a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade do Porto (2018), where she engaged early in scientific research, combining chemical analysis of dietary supplements with microbiological studies on pathogenic yeasts. She further enhanced her international experience through the ERAMUS+ programme, undertaking a research internship at Università del Piemonte Orientale (Italy), focusing on microbial virulence and antifungal resistance. Professionally, Sofia acquired a multidisciplinary background through internships in both community and hospital pharmacy settings before fully dedicating herself to scientific research. She has contributed as a research fellow to the MicoBioExtract project (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-033939), focusing on the valorization of mushroom by-products, and to the Gastrocure project (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-032094), exploring bioactives from soybeans and cruciferous vegetables for gastrointestinal health applications. Sofia is also actively engaged in science dissemination initiatives, participating in events such as "Semana Aberta" at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia (ESB-UCP), promoting scientific interest and outreach to the broader public. In 2024, she co-supervised a Bachelor's thesis in Microbiology at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia — Universidade Católica Portuguesa, titled "Microwave Hydrodiffusion and Gravity and their impact on Isothiocyanate Extraction: microbiological quality and antimicrobial potential", further strengthening her mentoring and academic leadership skills. Throughout her academic career, Sofia has co-authored peer-reviewed scientific articles, contributed to book chapters, and presented her work through oral and poster communications at national and international conferences. Her main research interests include nanotechnology, gut microbiota, intestinal health, bioactive compounds, biotechnology, bioproducts, and pharmaceutical and nutraceutical innovations. Guided by the belief that "the only way to do great work is to love what you do" (Steve Jobs), she is dedicated to advancing scientific innovation, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and elevating science in society.
