Cláudio M. Gomes (PhD 1999, h-index 39) is Full Professor of Biochemistry at Ciências ULisboa and an expert in protein biochemistry, structure and folding, leading research on molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative and protein folding diseases. ¦ Prof. Gomes obtained a PhD in Biochemistry (1999) from ITQB/NOVA through the competitive Gulbenkian PhD Program (1995-1998) and holds a BSc in Applied Chemistry/Biotechnology (1994) from FCT/NOVA. His academic career launched as Assistant Professor at FCT/NOVA (2000), then transitioned to ITQB/NOVA (2003) as an independent group leader after a competitive appointment as Assistant Researcher (held 2003-2014), earning the title of Aggregate in Structural Biochemistry (2013). ¦ In 2015, he secured a top-level Coordinating Researcher position through the FCT Investigator Programme and moved his laboratory to BioISI Ciências ULisboa, subsequently becoming Associate Professor (2016) and Full Professor (2023) through competitive appointments. ¦ As senior academic Prof. Gomes has held several positions of responsibility at Ciências ULisboa including Vice-President of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department (2018-20), elected member of the Pedagogical Council (2019-2021), Coordinator of the MSc Biochemistry and Biomedicine (2018-2024), and Vice-coordinator of the BioISI Biomedicine thematic line (2018-). ¦ Prof. Gomes heads the Protein Misfolding and Amyloids in Biomedicine laboratory at BioISI Ciências ULisboa (https://folding.campus.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/). The laboratory focuses on unraveling the molecular mechanisms of protein misfolding and aggregation, with specific emphasis on neurodegenerative and protein folding diseases. Using a collaborative and integrative approach, the research spans from molecular levels to cellular and organismal contexts, employing a combination of biochemical, molecular, cellular, and biophysical methods. ¦ Coordinator of TWIN2PIPSA Horizon Europe Twinning project (2022-25) fostering collaboration with the Universities of Cambridge, Copenhagen, and Tel Aviv. Prof. Gomes has secured research funding amounting to 2M€ from national and international sources. As coordinator, he led 16 national and 4 international grants, contributing significantly to the advancement of diverse research areas. ¦ Prof Gomes has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to nurturing researchers and fostering collaborative research environments. Overseeing the academic journeys of 60 students, including 12 PhDs and 21 MSc graduates, he ensured their success, with recognized works receiving awards for excellence. The impact of his mentorship extends to 10 post-docs, 1 Assistant Researcher, and 1 Project Manager as well as to 11 BSc thesis students and 12 international trainees, contributing to a diverse and dynamic research community. ¦ He regularly serves as international expert project reviewer for national funding agencies, the European Commission and foundations and as peer-reviewer for international scientific journals. ¦ Prof. Gomes has extensive publishing and editorial experience, both as a prolific author (134 international peer reviewed papers), member of editorial boards and editor of thematic issues and books. His work has received +4400 citations and his current h-index is 38 (WoS/Scopus).
