I completed a PhD in Zoology in 2011 at the University of Cambridge (UK), a MSc in Mathematics Applied to Biological Sciences in 2006 at the School of Agronomy (Univ of Lisbon) and a first degree in Biology in 2000 at the Faculty of Sciences (Univ of Lisbon). Between 2009 and 2019 I held two postdoctoral positions in the University of Lisbon and from 2019 I was an Assistant Researcher at the CIBIO-InBIO, University of Porto. In 2021, I was awarded a FCT Auxiliary Researcher contract in the 4th Edition of the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus at the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (BIOPOLIS-CIBIO). From 2025, I am a Auxiliary Researcher at cE3c, in the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. I have published 61 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (1321 citations; Scopus h-index=22) and 8 book chapters; supervised 1 postdoc, 9 PhD, 7 MCs, 4 undergraduate students and several research assistants. I have participated in 16 research projects launched in competitive calls, totalizing more than 10 million euros. In three of the projects, I am the Principal Investigator (budget ca. 535k€). I am associated Editor of IBIS, a top-Ornithological journal. I coordinate a long-term study (> 25 years) on the ecology of steppe birds (lesser kestrel and European roller) in Castro Verde and another (> 10 years) on the migratory behaviour of white storks. My research aims at understanding how global environmental changes can impact the breeding biology, migratory behaviour, habitat quality and population dynamics of birds. Three lines of investigation: (1) Ecology and conservation of steppe-land birds, (2) Climate change and conservation adaptation and (3) Migratory behaviour and movement ecology. In the last years I have focused on the latter. Migratory species poses the greatest challenges to conservationists as they face a large range of potential threats across their distribution areas. My research focuses on tackling the mechanisms through which migratory behaviour can be altered, driven by anthropogenic environmental changes. To achieve these goals, I have engaged in the study of partial migration (bird species that have resident and migratory populations), showing that species are changing their migratory decisions in response to global change. I address these questions by combining standard field methods (monitoring, ringing) with state-of-the-art GPS loggers combined with tri-axial acceleration and novel genetic and physiological approaches. My model species include the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) and the White-Stork (Ciconia ciconia).
