Catarina M. Paquete is an Assistant researcher (CEEC position) at ITQB NOVA. She has a degree in Applied Chemistry from FCT NOVA and have finished her PhD at ITQB NOVA in 2006. During her research career Dr Paquete has been devoted to the elucidation of the extracellular electron transfer mechanisms performed by electroactive organisms. Using different techniques, including on molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and electrochemistry, she is now dedicated in exploring the factors that control electron transfer processes in living organisms and elucidating those that affect electroactivity in electroactive biofilms. This information is being used to optimize electroactive organisms towards their practical application in biotechnological systems, addressing various contemporary societal challenges. She has been the PI of 7 research projects (2 ongoing), and have established a network of national and international collaborations. Up to date Dr Paquete have published 5 book chapters, 53 peer-review research papers (19 as corresponding author) and have participated in more than 70 conferences with poster and oral presentations (with more than 20 oral presentations). She has gained international recognition for her scientific contributions, having an h-index of 23 and accumulating over 1200 citations. Additionally, she served on the board of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET) for a period of three years. She also has a wide experience in the supervision of students, including 2 Post-doc (2 ongoing), 8 PhD (3 ongoing), 7 Masters and more than 40 graduate and undergraduate students under several research projects, including Biochemistry Research Projects, Lab Rotations, and Internships. .

2020 - Atual COST ACTION Phoenix CA19123 (part of the management committee of Portugal) Humanity faces unprecedented challenges: global warming, overuse of fossil fuel energy and rapidly growing urbanisation. PHOENIX aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of Bio-electrochemical systems. The activities of PHOENIX will be related to the characterization of BESs technologies and their implementation as bio-remediator, bio-sensors, and bio-reactors connected to sustainable urban planning, educational and socio-economic aspects.
