Eduardo Gonza´lez-Gorben~a has a PhD in Ocean Engineering with emphasis in Coastal Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a MSc in Coastal and Port Engineering from the University of Cantabria, and a BSc in Environmental Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. He has a large experience applying numerical models to coastal engineering projects of different degrees of complexity. Since his PhD, his research has been focused on marine renewable energy, specifically with tidal in-stream energy. In October 2016, he joined the Marine Offshore Energy Team from the University of Algarve (Portugal) to work in the project SCORE that involved the first deployment of a Tidal Energy Converter (TEC) in Portuguese waters. Recently, he has been awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship for the project proposal named OpTiCA – Optimisation of Tidal energy Converter Arrays. This project started in July 2017 and aims to provide a significant contribution towards the understanding of (a) the effects of TECs interactions with the environment; (b) the capabilities and limitations of common strategies used for the numerical modelling of TECs; and (c) how to mathematically formulate optimisation models to solve the TEC array layout problem considering technical, socio-economic and environmental constraints.

  1. Optimal configuration problem identification of electrical power cable in tidal turbine farm via traveling salesman problem modeling approach. Electrical power cables in tidal turbine farms contribute a significant share to capital expenditure (CAPEX). As a result, the routing of electrical power cables connecting turbines to cable collector hubs must be designed so as to obtain the least cost configuration. This is referred to as a tidal cable routing problem. This problem possesses several variants depending on the number of cable coll. 2018. 2. Deployment characterization of a floatable tidal energy converter on a tidal channel, Ria Formosa, Portugal. This paper presents the results of a pilot experiment with an existing tidal energy converter (TEC), Evopod 1 kW floatable prototype, in a real test case scenario (Faro Channel, Ria Formosa, Portugal). A baseline marine geophysical, hydrodynamic and ecological study based on the experience collected on the test site is presented. The collected data was used to validate a hydro-morphodynamic model,. 2018. Pacheco, A.; González-Gorbeña, Eduardo; Plomaritis, T.A.; Garel, Erwan; Gonçalves, J. M. 3. Assessing the effects of Tidal Energy Converter array size on hydrodynamics of Ria Formosa (Portugal). This paper investigates the effects of Tidal Energy Converter (TEC) array size at a tidal channel on flood/ebb discharges at multi-inlet coastal lagoon by applying numerical modelling. The paper presents a case study for the Faro-Olhão inlet in the Ria Formosa (Portugal), a potential site for tidal in-stream energy extraction. Arrays of up to 11 rows with 5 TECs each were studied to assess impacts. 2017.
