Tiago has a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Geology and a Master's degree in Molecular Genetics, both from the School of Sciences, University of Minho (UM). During Tiago´s studies, he acquired solid knowledge on cellular and molecular biology. Tiago organized scientific events such as the "I Jornadas da Ciência" and workshops on fungal manipulation aimed for master's students. He also coordinated science outreach activities for high school students as a member of the Scientia group, including the European Researchers Night. He volunteered for the "investigadores regressam à escola" initiative, organized by the School of Sciences, UM, with the aim of bringing research closer to younger’s and fostering their interest in the sciences. Tiago also participated in seminars, symposiums, and lectures covering topics in health sciences, molecular biology, and genetics. Moreover, he was actively engaged in four research projects (PTDC/CTA-AMB/29505/2017-collaborator; EXPL/BAA-AGR/1096/2021-team member, 2022.03348.PTDC - research fellow and C644929456-00000040 - research fellow). Tiago master's thesis (https://hdl.handle.net/1822/82657) involved the analysis of yeast S. cerevisiae response at a cellular level induced by cymoxanil, a systemic fungicide. During this period, Tiago gained laboratory experience in molecular/cellular biology, microbiology, and toxicology. He also completed a course on yeast genetics, focused on cellular responses to stress and environmental sustainability. Tiago´s work was presented in the form of a poster on Microbiotec21, an international conference. But not only, his work was orally presented on I Meeting of Master's Students in Molecular Genetics. Due to the importance of results obtained Tiago´s work is going to be published (manuscript in preparation - co-first author). Upon Master thesis completion, Tiago worked on the characterization of propolis samples collected at Gerês over consecutive years, to determine their quality. The parameters assessed were ash, water, wax and balsam contents, total polyphenol, total flavonoid and total ortho-diphenol determination; antioxidant and antimicrobial activity assessment. This work was already published (https://doi.org/10.3390/plants12223909; IF = 4.568; Q1). Simultaneously, Tiago, evaluated the antifungal activity of essential oils against several filamentous fungi. He was also a research member of the WINE-TUNING (EXPL/BAA-AGR/1096/2021) being one of the responsible for the phenotypic screen of distinct yeast strains, identifying yeast with characteristics relevant for must fermentation. This project also led to a paper publication (https://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4724522; preprint) and three oral communications, two of them in international conferences. Moreover, Tiago mentored young students at ungraduated and master level students. Tiago was invited to participate as a research fellow in the project Sporob_SiA (2022.03348.PTDC). The project aimed to understand the contribution of sialidase-1 overexpression to the increased pathogenicity of Sporothrix brasiliensis comparatively with Sporothrix schenckii, using different models of infection. All these projects led to Tiago´s knowledge consolidation in microbiology, particularly in molecular genetics, using distinct techniques like plasmid construction and CRISPR-Cas9 machinery. Tiago also acquired expertise in human cells culture and animal cells infection assays. The work developed in the Sporob_SiA was presented in Microbiotec23, an international congress, in a poster format. Tiago was hired as a research fellow for the project VIIAFOOOD, (C644929456-00000040, PRR and European Union Next Generation EU funds). Recently, Tiago began a PhD program in Biomedical Sciences at ICBAS, funded by FCT.
