My multidisciplinary PhD dissertation entitled ¿Novel functional additives for aquafeeds: bioprocessing of brewer¿s spent grain and Ulva rigida¿ was funded by a competitive call of FCT and concluded in 2022. It was conducted in 3 research centers, the Centre of Biological Engineering of the University of Minho (CEB), the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) and the Faculty of Sciences of University of Oporto (FCUP). The work carried out in my PhD initiated a new research line between both investigation groups. This new research line resulted in the funding of 3 collaborative projects (InovFeed, SPO3, and MB4Aqua) and the origination of 4 other doctoral theses related to the topic. The results of my PhD had an impact on the agrifood and aquaculture sectors, since the application of the fermented or enzyme-treated by-products improved the digestibility and feed utilization efficiency of fish, overcoming the significant challenges of using agri-food by-products as aquaculture feed ingredients. I published 19 papers in peer-reviewed and indexed by ISI Web of Science, of which 14 publications are open access, 7 as first author and 4 as corresponding author. According to Scopus, 76.9% of the articles are in the top 25% of the most cited documents worldwide, 84.6% are in the top 25% of journals by CiteScore and 53.8% were co-authored with researchers from other countries. I presented 7 oral (1 Plenary Talk) and 16 poster communications at National and International conferences, and 2 congress Proceedings. The collaborative and multidisciplinary work I conducted during my PhD within three institutions (Portugal and Spain) resulted in a European patent request (Ref.: PAT413/2021; EP4070666), which is in the final stage for acceptance. I have participated in 8 projects (3 international). I am currently part of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems (IF 4.7) and I actively contribute to the revision of articles in Aquaculture journal (IF 4.5). My research has always involved collaborations with the industry, such as fish farming (Sea8, S.A.), feed production (Sparos), beer industry (UNICER S. A.), and insect industries (Galinsect, S.A.). In addition, I am actively involved in the creation of a spinoff related to the biorefinery of insects, which was recently selected through a competitive program funded by the University of Vigo to attend a detailed course in entrepreneurship (XII Incuvi Emprende 2024). As the first researcher in the group to undertake the application of biotechnological processes on various biomasses for their use as ingredients in aquaculture, I have been able to train other researchers (4 PhD and 4 MsC students) within this topic, allowing me to co-author additional papers and congress communications. I also organized divulgation activities for the scientific and general audience communities, such as the National AquaImprove Workshop (CIIMAR) and the CEB Open Days. Regarding international mobility, I undertook a 2-month predoctoral stay at the University of Almería (Spain), where I developed in vitro digestibility assays using the enzymes produced during my PhD. This stay resulted in the publication of 3 articles, the presentation of 2 oral communications and part of the results were included in the European patent that is about to be approved. Since 2023, I have been working as a postdoctoral researcher at the BiotecnIA Group of the University of Vigo (Spain). I am participating in two research projects, one of which is a European project (Promiseang, HORIZON-JU-CBE-2022-RIA, 101112378) related to obtaining alternative protein sources from marine resources. My research experience in formulating diets for aquaculture fish is contributing to the development of the project. I am acquiring expertise in the application of new biorefinery processes to extract protein, such as deep eutectic solvents, and mentoring a PhD student.
