João Barbosa Breda is a glaucoma specialist at Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João (CHUSJ), in Porto, Portugal. He has also an academic appointment as Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). He received his MD degree from the University of Coimbra in 2011. He then completed his Ophthalmology residency at CHUSJ in 2018. Wanting to pursue a career in glaucoma, he became a European Glaucoma Society (EGS) Fellow, performing clinical duties and research under the supervision of Ingeborg Stalmans, in Leuven, Belgium. He has obtained an award as 2nd best in the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) exam in May 2019. He received clinical research training from Harvard Medical School (Clinical Scholars Research Training Program) and FMUP and has earned a double PhD degree at FMUP (Portugal) and at KU Leuven (Belgium) for his work on ocular blood flow in glaucoma, in January 2020. He is currently working in 2 research teams: Cardiovascular Sciences Research Unit (UnIC)@RISE, FMUP, Portugal; and Research Group Ophthalmology, KU Leuven, Belgium. His current research interests focus on ocular vascular changes in glaucoma and systemic diseases, metabolomics, artificial intelligence and imaging. He is currently serving as editorial board member for the journal Translational Vision Science & Technology and is the Communications Committee Chair for the European Glaucoma Society. He has been invited as member of the expert panel of the European Glaucoma Society for the updating of its latest guidelines. Moreover, he is the current representative of EUEYE at the EUnetHTA Stakeholder Network of the European Comission and a member of the glaucoma expert committee of the EVICR.net.
