André Almeida is a Lisbon based medical doctor, university lecturer and clinical researcher, having graduated in 2008 at the University of Lisbon's Medical School, having attended one year at the Charles University in Prague, completed Harvard Medical School's Clinical Scholars Research Training and being currently enrolled in a PhD program in Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Specialty training in Internal Medicine, working as a consultant for >8 years at the Central Lisbon's University Hospital Center, in multiple clinical capacities such as general ward, emergency department and HIV outpatient clinic. Since the onset of the pandemic having been responsible for coordinating a dedicated Covid-19 ward, drafting local evidence-based guidelines for management of hospitalised non-critical Covid-19 patients, starting a dedicated multi-disciplinary post-covid outpatient clinic and building a hospital-based registry for all inpatients within the scope of Internal Medicine. Research wise, his activity has focused mostly on the epidemiology of HIV infection and its interaction with acute respiratory illness, on the clinical epidemiology of seasonal respiratory virus and on nosocomial multi-drug resistant bacteria. Having published 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers; authored 37 communications in national conferences, 24 in international international conferences; principal investigator in an international multi-centric project studying hospitalised patients with viral respiratory illness; co-investigator in 3 multi-centric clinical trials; currently integrating the EuCARE Project, an EU-funded international research consortium to foster Pandemic Preparedness. Invited Lecturer for undergraduate training of medical students at NOVA Medical School in Lisbon (Internal Medicine and Toxicology); supervisor for post-graduate medical trainees. Faculty of multiple post-graduate courses, one of which in the role of organiser (Workshop on Clinical Research Methods).
