Maria João Bessa graduated in Bioengineering from the Faculty of Engineering and Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto (UP) in 2015. She recently earned her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from ICBAS-UP in July 2022. Maria João has a strong background in health-related scientific research, mainly focusing on the in vitro toxicity assessment of (nano)particles and chemicals emitted during real scenarios of occupational exposure. During her PhD, she evaluated the toxicity of nanoparticles used in the manufacturing of ceramic goods or released from industrial processes employed in the ceramic industry, using both conventional (2D) and advanced (3D) in vitro pulmonary cell models (CERASAFE project - SIINN/0004/2014). Currently, Maria João is a Post-Doc Research Fellow in the 4FirHealth funded project (PCIF/SSO/0090/2019) aimed at investigating firefighters' occupational exposure to health-relevant pollutants released during fires, with a focus on dermal, inhalation and ingestion routes, using 2D and 3D in vitro cell models. Until now, Maria João has participated in 7 national and international research projects, publishing 21 peer-reviewed scientific papers (9 as the first author) and 2 book chapters. Over the years, she has strengthened her technical and scientific skills in the field of in vitro toxicology and health-related sciences by participating in many international training courses, most of which she was awarded with travel grants and fellowship support. Maria João also shared her work with the scientific community in different national and international congresses of reference in the field of Toxicology and Nanosciences, including 10 oral (6 as the main speaker) and 20 poster communications, and 6 conference proceedings. Maria João was also involved in seminars and training classes for MSc and PhD students in the medical health area and in the follow-up and monitoring of young scientists. Throughout her career, Maria João has gained important technical expertise, scientific maturity, mentoring abilities, and other crucial skills including research methodology, critical thinking, communication, teamwork collaboration, time management, adaptability, and resilience, which highly contributed to her growth as an independent scientist.
