Ana Poças earned her Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Aveiro, where she built a solid background in physics, electronics, and programming for biomedical applications. Her academic work reflects a strong interest in magnetism, especially nanomagnetism, and its biomedical uses. As an undergraduate, Ana studied how the size of Mn ferrite nanoparticles affects their magnetic properties for potential use in cancer hyperthermia therapy. Later, for her Master’s thesis, she developed, synthesized, and characterized lanthanide-based contrast agents to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). She also worked as a research grant holder at the University of Aveiro, joining Luís Mafra’s Specko team to study lithium silicate sorbents for CO2 capture Through these projects, she gained hands-on experience with advanced characterization techniques like solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), SQUID measurements, and MRI phantom studies. Beyond research, Ana has contributed to the scientific community by presenting her findings at conferences, including the Portuguese Magnetism Conference and the CICECO Jornadas. She was selected for the PANACEA NMR Summer School in Venice, where she also gave a talk, while deepening her knowledge of solid-state NMR; and conducted measurements at the POWGEN instrument with the support of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. In January 2025, Ana was awarded an Erasmus-funded grant at the Werner Siemens Imaging Center in Tübingen, Germany, where she attended a course on metabolic imaging and medical diagnostics. After the course, she stayed for a research internship to expand her skills on advanced imaging techniques. During her time there, she worked under the guidance of Dr. André Martins, an expert in MRI techniques, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies like MRI, PET, deuterium metabolic imaging, SpinLab measurements, light-sheet microscopy, and multiphoton microscopy. She also trained in animal handling procedures. This experience deepened her knowledge of biomedical engineering and clinical diagnostics. Ana is a motivated researcher with strong organizational and teamwork skills. Alongside her academic pursuits, she has been actively involved in student associations and event organizations. Notably, she was part of the organizing team for ENEEB (Encontro Nacional de Estudantes de Engenharia Biomédica), a national conference that hosts lectures, workshops, and social activities for over 400 biomedical engineering students. Committed to continuous professional development, Ana regularly attends specialized workshops and lectures to remain abreast of advancements in her field. In preparation for her PhD studies, Ana will participate in the Hands-on Workshop for DNP-enhanced Solid-State NMR and Paramagnetic NMR in May 2025, where she will also deliver a presentation on her research. She will commence her PhD at the University of Aveiro (Dr. Luís Mafra) by September 2025, in collaboration with the Werner Siemens Imaging Center and the Max Planck Institute (Dr. André Martins) and CiQUS (Dr. Manuel Souto). Her doctoral research will focus on the development of novel contrast agents for ultra-low-field MRI, with the goal of contributing to progress in nanomedicine and biomedical imaging.
