I am Principal Investigator (with Agregação) and Head of the Organometallic Catalysis Group at ITQB NOVA (Lisbon, Portugal). I graduated with honours in Chemistry from the University of Alcalá (Madrid, Spain), and I obtained my PhD in 1993 from the University of Sussex, UK, where I conducted research on main group chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Michael F. Lappert, FRS. Upon completion of my PhD studies, I was awarded an Assistant Professor position (1993) at the Univ. of Alcalá, where I stayed for four years (Researcher MEC, 1994-1997). During that period, I joined the Inorganic Chemistry Department, and I worked on the development of early transition metals for catalytic polymerisation reactions, and participated in the teaching activities of the Department. In 1997, I moved to Portugal to join the group of Prof. C. Romão at ITQB NOVA, working first on the metallocene chemistry of group 6 metals, and later, in the development of CO releasing drugs for inflammation therapy. I was also Invited Auxiliary Professor at Univ. Católica-Lisbon where I lectured Chemistry (2001-2003). In 2004, I started my independent career at ITQB as Auxiliar Researcher (2004-14), later as Coordinator Researcher of the FCT Program Investigator IF-FCT (2014-2019, Competitive call), and in 2019 I secured a permanent position as Principal Investigator. I have built and lead the research group of Organometallic Chemistry & Catalysis (since 2004 to present). My research spans the areas of synthetic organometallic chemistry and catalysis. My group has developed sustainable catalytic methods for a range of organic transformations using Earth-abundant metals and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. My current research interests include hydrosilylation, transfer hydrogenation, hydrogen borrowing processes, oxidative coupling reactions and catalytic methods for the activation of carbon dioxide mediated by 3d metals. Recently, I have extended the research of the group to the development of metal complexes as promising source for new anticancer and antimicrobial drugs. I have published 100 publications including 85 scientific papers, 8 book chapters, and 7 patents. I am the Secretary of EuChemS-Organometallic Chemistry Division and the Portuguese representative in EuChemS-DOM. I am the future President of the Catalysis and Porous Materials Division of the Portuguese Chemical Society. I am member of the Directive Board of 6 chemical journals (e.g. ChemCatChem, Chem. Eur. J. , J. Organomet. Chem.), Head of the Chemistry Division at ITQB NOVA, elected Member of the Scientific Council of ITQB NOVA, PI of 12 funded grant-projects, member of the Executive Committee-PhD Program Sustainable Chemistry, and Member of the Director Board and Executive Committee-PhD Program Catalysis and Sustainability. I have participate in several international and national panels for evaluation of projects and individual grants. I have been invited to participate in 45 conferences as Invited/Key/Plenary lecturer. In addition, I have presented more than 150 communications (10 oral, more than 140 posters) in national and international conferences. During the period 2018-2025 (February), I have published 32 publications (27 scientific papers, 4 book chapters, and 1 patent). I have been successful in obtaining financial funding as Principal Investigator of 2 FCT-projects and co-PI of 2 FCT-projects. During this period, I have supervised 11 PhD thesis (7 awarded and 4 ongoing), 9 Master thesis, 7 post-doctoral fellows, several undergraduate students (bachelor, final projects and Erasmus students), and 7 internships of PhD international students. In addition, I have participated with 24 invited/key/Plenary lectures in national and international conferences.
