Eduardo Tovar received the Licentiate, MSc and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, in 1990, 1995 and 1999, respectively. He his Professor ("Professor Coordenador com Agregação") in the Computer Engineering Department (DEI) at the School of Engineering (ISEP) of Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), where he is engaged in research on real-time distributed systems, safety-critical software platforms, wireless sensor networks, multiprocessor systems, cyber-physical systems and industrial communication systems. He was founder and leads, since 2003, the CISTER Research Unit. CISTER is the only research unit, in the areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), to attain the top-most classification of "Excellent" in the FCT international evaluation exercises of 2003, 2008 and 2018. In addition to CISTER, he has been fully engaged with the management and the development of the Vortex CoLab. Vortex is a co-laboratory on Cyber-Physical Systems and Cyber-Security. He is (since 2018) the President of the Vortex Scientific Council and a member of the Vortex Supervisory Board. The Vortex CoLab brings together industry and research units with a focus on externalizing research results. He had leading roles (Program Chair/Co-Chair; General Chair/Co-Chair, Local Host Chair/Co-Chair or Keynote Speaker) in most of the core conferences in real-time and cyber-physical systems: ECRTS 2003 and ECRTS 2011 (General Chair); ECRTS 2005 (Program Chair); IEEE RTSS 2024 (General Chair); IEEE RTAS 2013 (Program Chair); IEEE RTAS 2014 (General Chair); ACM/IEEE ICCPS 2016 (Program Co-Chair); ACM/IEEE ICCPS 2017 (General Co-Chair); IEEE RTCSA 2010 and RTCSA 2016 (Program Co-Chair); IEEE RTCSA 2019 (General Co-Chair) and RTNS 2008 (Keynote Speaker). He also was a Program Chair or General Chair in various other key events in the area of embedded computing systems, including: ARCS 2014 (Program Co-Chair), a conference series on Architectures for Computing Systems; IEEE WFCS 2000 (General Co-Chair) and IEEE WFCS 2014 (Program Co-Chair), a series on Factory Communication Systems. In terms of other service to the community, he was (2015 ¿ 2019) elected Vice-Chair of the ACM SIGBED Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). Additionally, he was (1999 ¿ 2013) member of the executive committee of the Euromicro Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems. And from 2008 until 2019 (with the exception of 2 years), he was member of the executive committee of the Technical Committee on Real-time Systems (TC-RTS) of the IEEE. He has been supervising or co-supervising more than 20 PhD students (18 already concluded; 3 currently on-going). He has been Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI of 6 concluded international projects, including a H2020/CS2 project (THERMAC) and a Network of Excellence (CONET), and local (CISTER-ISEP) PI in other 13 international research projects. He has been PI or Co-PI of 6 fundamental research projects (FCT projects). He has co-authored more than 80 journal papers with a focus on the various topics related to real-time systems and cyber-physical systems. He has also co-authored more than 170 full papers published in conference proceedings. During these more than 30 years of career, he has been named expert for the evaluation of research proposals and programs. These include VR (Sweden); FFG (Austria); VLAIO (Belgium); EMBRAPII Competence Centers (Brazil); FCT-CMU (Portugal). In 2018, he was nominated by the FCT President as one of the 7 national experts to help structure the strategy of Portugal for the Horizon Europe Programme on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). In 2020 he was awarded researcher of the year of P.Porto; the first time the prize was assigned to a researcher of ISEP.
