Nelson Castro began his research career in 2013 after completing his integrated master’s in electronics engineering at the University of Minho. He initially worked at the Physics Centre, developing electronic instrumentation and printed sensors based on polymeric materials (magnetoelectric, piezoelectric, piezoresistive, and capacitive). He also co-founded the nanotech start-up Nanopaint Lda, producing smart inks for sensor printing, and tutored three master’s students. His expertise includes sensor design, material selection, electronics instrumentation (digital/analog), PCB design, data acquisition, and programming (C, C++, C#). In 2017, he briefly worked in industry at Somatica Lda, developing piezoelectric keyboard interfaces, before joining the Basque Centre for Materials as a researcher and electronics consultant. He later pursued and completed a Ph.D. in Project Engineering at the University of the Basque Country, gaining skills in CAD, mechatronics, and biomaterials for tissue engineering. In 2021, he co-founded BioEnce S.L. to commercialize his Ph.D. research, earning the ZITEK award for the most innovative thesis. Since 2023, he has been a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minho, Physics Center, focusing on printed electronics and biomimetic devices for tissue engineering. He also worked at INL (2023–2025) on readout electronics for flexible pressure sensor arrays and MEMS devices. To date, he has authored 20 journal articles, a book chapter, holds 2 patents, and has delivered 13 conference presentations, holding a H-index of 13. Since March 2025, he has been working at the Control, Automation, and Robotics group at the Algoritmi Centre (University of Minho), developing sensors for enhanced tactile grips for robotic applications aiming for AI tactile data feeding. His work bridges electronic interfaces for smart materials and mechatronic systems.
