Rodrigo Costa

Rodrigo Costa is an Associate Professor (since 2020) at the Department of Bioengineering (DBE) of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon. He graduated in Biological Sciences at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1998) and obtained his M.Sc. degree in Ecology from this same University (2001). He acquired his Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany (2006) and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, from 2006 to 2008. He was then awarded the competitive Research Scientist contracts “Ciência” (2008) and “FCT Investigator” (2015) from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). During this period, he founded and led the “Microbial Ecology and Evolution Research Group” (MicroEcoEvo) at the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), Algarve University, through extramural funding. Prof. Costa was an invited affiliate of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), University of California at Berkeley, USA (March 2019-August 2021), and of CCMAR (2016 to 2021). He currently serves as the Ambassador of the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) in Portugal (since 2014) and Senior Editor for ISME Communications (since 2025), was an invited member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (2019-2025) and is member of three academic societies. Prof. Costa belongs to the scientific committee of the International Symposium on Bacterial Genetics and Ecology (BAGECO), which he chaired in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2019. He was selected by the Portuguese Government in 2023 as one of fifteen specialists to propose measures for developing the national Blue Biotechnology Sector. Currently, Prof. Costa leads the MicroEcoEvo team in the Biological Sciences Research Group at DBE/IST, and is the curator of MicroEcoEvoCC (https://microecoevocc.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/), a lab infrastructure providing access to marine bacterial cultures. His research investigates the diversity and function of microorganisms in natural and fabricated biomes, emphasizing Eukaryote-Prokaryote symbioses studied via metagenomics, their implications to host/ecosystem health and climate regulation, and potential use as renewable biotechnologies. Current research projects focus on harnessing the metabolism of bacterial symbionts of marine organisms and developing microbiome engineering approaches to (i) suppress microbial diseases and mitigate climate change stressors in aquaculture and coral reefs, and (ii) design marine-based bioproducts (health, environment, food, and feed) to support the circular blue bioeconomy. Prof. Costa is the author of c. 120 scientific publications, including articles in top-ranked journals such as Microbiome, The ISME Journal, ISME Communications, Nature Communications, Nature Microbiology, Communications Biology, Environmental Microbiology, and Molecular Ecology. His published work has been cited > 9,100 times, featuring an h-index of 48, an i-10 index of 84. Prof. Costa participated in over 270 communications (> 120 oral) in scientific conferences, workshops, and colloquia. Since 2010, he supervised several post-doctoral fellows, Ph.D., M.Sc., and undergraduate students - in the framework of 24 R&D projects (12 as PI, 4 as Co-PI/Coordinator), leading eight Ph.D. thesis (four ongoing) and 37 M.Sc. thesis (five ongoing) completions as main/co-supervisor, while securing > 3.8 M€ extramural research funds. Prof. Costa coordinates course units on Ecology and Microbiomes at IST/ULisbon, having received “excellence” teaching awards from students throughout the years.
