Nuno Franco is a Researcher at the Laboratory Animal Science group of the i3S, University of Porto, having published 15 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 2 book chapters, 8 peer-reviewed conference papers, 23 conference abstracts, 1 encyclopaedia entry, and 1 biorXiv preprint (460+ citations on Google Scholar, h-index=11, i10=12). He has 43 confirmed peer-reviews for 21 different journals on Publons (public profile accessible on-line), and has given 46 oral presentations (29 of which as invited speaker). Nuno has a background in both Education and Biology, with a 5-year licentiate degree (MSc+M.Ed) in Biology and Geology Education (2003), and a 4-year licentiate degree in (Animal) Biology (2007) from the University of Trás-os-Montes-e-Alto-Douro. He finished his PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto in 2012. Nuno is currently developing and testing new technologies for laboratory animal research, particularly to give insight into the thermobiology of disease, and for health and welfare assessment. Other research topics include animal welfare, animal ethics, and legal, social and scientific issues around animal research. He has also published on the topic of science communication and education. Nuno is a co-Principal Investigator of FCT-funded EVIEDVET project, leader of ACLAM-funded project on the identification of early humane endpoints in murine models of sepsis, Work Group 5 Leader of EU-funded ETPLAS (Education & Training Platform for Laboratory Animal Science), and a member of the FELASA working group on Experimental Design. Nuno has lectured on Design of Animal Experiments, Laboratory Animal Welfare, Systematic Reviews, Animal Ethics, Legislation of Animal Use, and the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of animal research), in post-graduate laboratory animal science courses at four universities and a polytechnic institute, and organises courses and workshops on Experimental Design, Competence Assessment, and Severity Classification of procedures (being a FELASA-designated trainer). Nuno is President-elect of ETPLAS, founded - and currently coordinates - the Portuguese Network of Animal Welfare Bodies - 'RedeORBEA'., sits on the board of NGO "Animal Research Tomorrow" and the board of the Portuguese Society for Laboratory Animal Science (SPCAL), being also an Independent Advisory Board Member of ERINHA-European Research Infrastructure on Highly Pathogenic Agents, and a Member of the i3S Animal Welfare and Ethics Body (ORBEA - Órgão Responsável pelo Bem-estar e Ética Animal). In 2013, he received the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare 'Young Animal Welfare Scientist of the Year Award'.
