More than 40 years experience in herbarium curation and research on the taxonomy, nomenclature, biogeography and conservation of African bryophytes, southern African mosses in particular. Involved in the preparation of the first two fascicles, and co-author of the 3rd fascicle of R.E. Magill's Moss Flora of Southern Africa (FSA). Revised the families Archidiaceae, Bryaceae, Orthotrichaceae, Rhabdoweisiaceae, Rhachitheciaceae and Sematophyllaceae for the FSA. Currently working on a synopsis of southern African mosses and engaged in an analysis of the endemic element of the region. Several new species and new records of mosses have been described in national and international journals. Author or co-author of more than 100 scientific and popular scientific publications. Member of the permanent Nomenclature Committee for Bryophytes of The International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and Co-chair of the IUCN SSC Bryophyte Specialist Group. Serves on the Editorial Board of Borziana, Mediterranean Journal of Cryptogamy.
