Manuel Curto completed his PhD at the University of Porto in 2017, focusing on the role of multiple colonization and hybridization in the speciation process of the Micromeria species complex (Lamiaceae) in the Canary Islands. This research was conducted in collaboration with Colorado State University and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (BOKU). During this period, Manuel Curto developed a strong background in plant evolutionary biology and became proficient in various phylogenomic and population genetic approaches. Further improving his analytical skills, Manuel Curto embarked on his first Postdoc at BOKU from 2017 to 2020, focusing on several conservation genetics projects. Notably, he developed bioinformatic pipelines for analyzing amplicon sequencing data. These pipelines were employed in numerous conservation genetic projects encompassing a wide range of topics, from studying bee foraging behavior using DNA metabarcoding to assessing ecological interactions to the impacts of anthropogenic pressures on the genetic diversity of natural populations. Subsequently, Manuel Curto secured a highly competitive researcher position at MARE implementing eDNA to describe freshwater communities from 2020 to 2023. This project provided an opportunity to further enhance his bioinformatic skills, including the development of new analytical approaches and the creation of reference genome databases. During this period Manuel Curto established new partnerships and integrated multiple projects focusing on freshwater ecology such as the assessment of impacts of invasive species, the evaluation of changes in trophic networks in response to climate change, and the use of eDNA to monitored endangered and invasive fish species. From 2023 Manuel Curto is a junior researcher position at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, aiming to implement the tools and capacities acquired during his Postdoc years to address various questions in the fields of plant evolution and conservation. These include exploring the factors shaping the diversification of plants in oceanic islands, implementing genomic tools for the conservation of emblematic Portuguese flora, and establishing monitoring tools based on genetic information.
