Mafalda Pinto concluded her BSc degree in Biology of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 2018, after undertaking her curricular internship at the Plant Stress lab (FCUP/GreenUPorto), a leading laboratory in Applied Plant Physiology and Biotechnology. During her internship, she studied the phytotoxic effects of nickel oxide nanoparticles in Lycium barbarum L. plants grown under in vitro conditions, which resulted in a scientific publication in a specialized journal (Chemosphere; Q1), as the first author. Furthermore, during her BSc degree, M. Pinto was awarded with the Prémio Escolar Doutor António Leitão (FCUP) for obtaining a grade superior to 16 (out of 20) in the Plant Physiology course. M. Pinto pursued further studies and completed her MSc degree in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants of FCUP in 2020. Her master's thesis, performed at Plant Stress lab and Lab Risk (FCUP/GreenUPorto), was fully integrated on the PEST(bio)CIDE project (PCIF/GVB/0150/2018) and focused on assessing the effectiveness and environmental safety of young eucalyptus leaf biomass as a biocide. During the year of her MSc thesis, M. Pinto disseminated her results through oral presentations at various national congresses and had the opportunity to participate, as a research fellow, in the project "Hands on Science for Sustainable Agrifood Production: From the Soil to the Fork" of the GreenUPorto research centre. More recently, M. Pinto was a research fellow of the PEST(bio)CIDE project, where she continued the work started in her master's thesis and, thus, foster her great interest in the research of sustainable strategies to increase plant productivity. During this period, she was interviewed by two national newspapers and by the news portal of the University of Porto to divulge some results obtained in her master thesis. In the last year, M. Pinto published a research article entitled "Herbicidal effects and cellular targets of aqueous extracts from young Eucalyptus globulus Labill. leaves" (Plants; Q1), and participated in several national and international congresses of her speciality, where she divulged, through oral or poster communications, the main results obtained in the scope of the PEST(bio)CIDE project. Currently, M. Pinto is a PhD student in Biology (FCUP) where she is focused on developing a nanobiopesticide to eliminate pests and diseases associated with tomato plants, by harnessing the biological properties of eucalyptus leaves.
