Helena Tomás graduated in Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology (IST, Lisbon, Portugal) and has a Ph.D. degree in Technological Chemistry/Biomaterials (1996, University of Lisbon, Portugal). Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the University of Madeira (Portugal) and Senior Researcher in the Materials Research Group at CQM-Centro de Química da Madeira. At UMa, among other responsibilities, she was Head of the Chemistry Department for several periods (2000-2003, 2019-2021, 2022-2025), President of the Pedagogical Board (1999-2001), and Director of the master program in Applied Biochemistry (2010-2019). Her teaching activity has been mainly focused on the Biochemistry and Biomaterials areas. Her research work stands out for its multidisciplinary approach, combining chemistry, materials science, and biotechnology to create impactful solutions with potential applications in regenerative medicine, and cancer (namely, targeted nanomaterials for cancer therapy). She has been mainly devoted to the development of nanogels and dendrimer-based and clay-based nanomaterials (drug/gene delivery and theranostics). She was principal investigator/participant in several research projects funded by FCT, INTERREG MAC, INTERREG Atlantic Area, ProCiência 2020, Horizon Europe, as well as Chinese institutions. At CQM, she was the main supervisor of 5 post-doc researchers, 5 PhD students (2 still ongoing), and 10 master students (she also co-supervised 4 post-doc researchers, 7 PhD students, and 12 master students). She belonged to the management committee of the COST action TD0802: Dendrimers in Biomedical Applications (2010-2013), as well as the COST action CA17140: NANO2CLINIC-Cancer nanomedicine - from the bench to the bedside (2018-2023, where she was a member of the proponent group). She authored/co-authored 85 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and 4 book chapters (WoS h-index= 39, total citations> 5700). She has 21 publications with more than 80 citations and one of her publications was cited > 1100 times. She was part of the Stanford University and Elsevier Worlds Top 2% Scientists list in 2022 and 2023. Throughout her entire career, she has consistently devoted a considerable amount of her time to promoting science among both younger audiences and the general public. In this regard, it is noteworthy to mention: a) She was a member of the National Commission for the celebration of the Year of the Periodic Table (2019) and promoted/organized various activities on the topic throughout the island of Madeira. b) She was responsible for organizing the event «A QUÍMICA É DIVERTIDA» («Chemistry in Fun», a regular science dissemination event involving fun experiments, colloquia, competitions, etc.) at CQM/UMa (2006-2019). c) She organized the participation of CQM in the nationwide initiative promoted by the «Ciência Viva» agency, offering research internships for high school students during the summer (2007-2019). d) She organized, in 2007, the CQM participation in a set of 3 television science programs for «Panda Channel» which is a TV channel dedicated to children. e) She was responsible (partner leader) for Madeira's participation in the European project Future2020: How will life be in 2020? Call: FP7-PEOPLE-2013-NIGHT, project 609809 (European Researchers' Night 2013). During this event, among other activities, she organized a TV debate with Madeira local TV (RTP Madeira). f) She presented numerous science lessons in secondary schools on the island of Madeira.
