Ana Bela Coelho Barros (Bela Barros) is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at RISE-Health, Center for Translational Health and Medical Biotechnology Research (TBIO), E2S, Polytechnic of Porto within the scope of the project "Digital intervention tool e2-ducass: e2-ducass digital tool intervention: bringing the health literacy tovulnerable populations for promoting physical activity, healthy diet patterns and mental andcardiovascular health (ERA4HE/0003/2023)," of the Translational Health and Medical Biotechnology Research Center (TBIO) of the School of Health of the Polytechnic University of Porto (E2S|P.PORTO), with Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) Financing Support. She holds a Ph.D. in Sustainable Chemistry (November 2024) from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto, the University of Aveiro, and NOVA School of Science and Technology (Lisbon). Her doctoral project, titled "Forest Fire Emissions: Exposure Data and Potential Health Risks for Firefighters and the General Population," received funding approval from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. She completed a Master's in Legal Medicine in November 2019 from the University of Porto’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar and earned a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences in June 2017 from the University of Aveiro. Bela completed an observational internship (June 2016 to July 2016) in the Pathology Service at the Porto Hospital Center and she was a research intern (October 2018 to December 2019) at the Molecular Oncology & Viral Pathology Group at IPO-Porto, EPE. During her research internship at IPO Porto, EPE, she gained training and laboratory experience in molecular biology and cancer research. Her master’s thesis, titled "Loss of Chromosome Y (LOY) in Blood Cells and its Potential as a Molecular Biomarker of Age-Related Diseases," led to her first co-authored review article. Bela was a Research Fellow at REQUIMTE-LAQV-ISEP under the BioFirEx Project (https://doi.org/10.54499/PCIF/SSO/0017/2018) from January 2020 to November 2020 and a Research fellow (with a FCT awarded PhD student grant) from December 2020 until November 2024. Throughout her doctoral studies, she has published seven scientific articles, six book chapters, and three conference proceedings. Two of her review articles received awards for being published in TOP 10 journals in their field, and her most recent book chapter, "Cardiorespiratory Symptoms and Disease among Firefighters," earned an honorable mention for Best Book Chapter at the 2023 International Symposium on Occupational Health and Safety. She served as a peer-reviewer for three scientific journals. She has actively participated in scientific events, presenting several oral and poster communications and she collaborated in the mentoring of master and bachelor students. She was a volunteer paramedic with the Portuguese Red Cross between 2017 and 2020 and was part of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Biomedical Sciences (ANCiB) from March 2020 to March 2022. Her primary scientific interests include Biomonitoring, Occupational Health, Public and Environmental Health.
