Florbela Carvalheiro

Florbela Carvalheiro holds a Ph.D. in Agro-industrial Engineering and is a Senior Researcher at Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit (LNEG, Portugal). She started her research work at INETI (Portugal), on fermentative processes for the valorization of the lignocellulosic biomass. Since her Ph.D. studies, she has been working on the development of mild pretreatment processes aiming at the selective fractionation of different types of biomass (lignocellulosic, aquatic) towards an integrated upgrading in a biorefinery framework. In particular, her research interests are related to the valorization of sugar streams (oligosaccharides) and aromatics (lignin and phenolic compounds). She has participated in 42 R&D projects (15 EU/international), 8 Technical Assistance Agreements and 2 knowledge networks, as project coordinator (1), project manager (3), work package leader (2), and task leader (8). She is the author of 8 patents, 10 book chapters, and 136 peer-review papers (73 indexed to Web of Science, H-index 28). At the academic level, she has been regularly collaborating in international advanced courses, as an invited lecturer, and as a thesis evaluator. She has been a supervisor of more than 70 students (Ph.D, post-doc, master, project fellows, and undergraduate students). From 2009-2017 she was the Coordinator of the Biomass Deconstruction Program at the Bioenergy Unit and she is a funder member of SIADEB, the Ibero-American Society for the Development of Biorefineries and a former member of the Fiscal Board (2010-2019). She also acts as an expert in several other organizations, namely in the European Energy Research Alliance EERA-Bioenergy and the European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance (ESEIA).
