I am a Researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of University of Aveiro, Portugal. Since completing my PhD 15 y ago at Cranfield University (UK), I developed experience in empirical/applied research and science in support of policy linked to my 3 previous postdocs, current research position (competitively funded) and participation in 12 national and EU projects. My research line is focused on optimising soil engineering and management strategies to improve soil functions/ecosystem services sustainably. I work on optimising effect-based approaches for monitoring biochar interactions with the soil habitat and the water exchange functions, towards maximising benefits and minimising trade-offs. I have co-authored 31 peer-reviewed papers, alongside a technical note to stakeholders, 4 book chapters and 3 books, including a European Commission's JRC technical-scientific Report (cited 1,500 times), the European Soil Biodiversity Atlas and the Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas, and disseminated my work to the public through national news items and TV broadcasts. At CESAM, I lead the BIOCHARCOLOGY team focused on biochar sustainable applications in agro-ecology and regenerative agriuclture. I am PI or co-PI of 5 on-going national and EU-funded research projects, and currently supervise 2 post-docs and 2 PhD students. I have 99 co-authors (Scopus) from the EU (incl. Regional Ministry of Agricultural, EC JRC and EFSA), UK, Switzerland, Israel and USA. Linked to on-going projects, at national level, I collaborate with Instituto Superior Técnico (IST-ID), Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), Univ. de Évora, Instituto Politécnico de Beja and the business group Terraprima. I am a Section Editor (biochar) of Journal Plant & Soil (IF 4.192, Springer). Throughout my research, I liaised with agroforestry institutions through Demonstration Actions and other activities to raise awareness of sustainable biochar usage.
