Nicasio Tomás Jiménez-Morillo (NTJM) is an associate researcher (2021.00711.CEECIND) working at MED Research Center from the University of Évora (Portugal). NTJM performed his PhD (2014-2017) at IRNAS-CSIC/University of Seville, focused on the CHEMICAL ALTERATIONS OF SOIL ORGANIC MATTER IN A FIRE-AFFECTED MEDITERRANEAN AREA and their role in soil water repellency. This thesis involved obtaining organic proxies (biomarkers) by using advanced analytical techniques, including: i) analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS), ii) bulk stable isotope analysis, iii) high resolution C, N and H stable isotope analysis by pyrolysis compound-specific isotope analysis (Py-CSIA), and iv) ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-ICR/MS). In addition, he has acquired remarkable mastery in up-to-date chemometric analysis (big data treatment, data mining and graphical-tools), as well as homemade analytical and statistical software. He became an expert in the analytical characterization of complex organic matrices (soils, sediments, and speleothems). His PhD thesis obtained the European mention and received the ¿PhD Extraordinary award for the best PhD thesis in Soil Science of the year 2018¿ by the Spanish Society of Soil Science. Based on his scientific and analytical skills, NTJM obtained his first postdoc fellowship to work as a researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development (MED), University of Évora (UÉvora), Portugal (2018-2019) where he applied pioneer analytical and multivariate statistical techniques (Py-CSIA, head-space-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, partial least square regression, modelling, etc) to assess the authenticity and possible alteration of extra virgen olive oil associated with different countries under different climatic conditions. Since 2018, NTJM is the responsible of stable isotope laboratory of Hercules Laboratory (SIL-Hercules). In 2019, he obtained a postdoc contract by FCT-Portugal as postdoctoral researcher at UÉvora (2019-2020) to investigate new molecular proxies that inform about diet of ancient populations and their migration patterns. Since 2020, NTJM is principal researcher (PI) of a Portuguese project funded by FCT with a budget of 299820¿ and a Europlanet 2024 TA project funded by European Union. In addition, NTJM is PI of ii) a R&D contract (10k¿) from Consorcio de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and ii) an exploratory R&D cooperation project (25k¿) funded by ¿Associação Oceano Atlântico¿ (Portugal). Currently, NTJM has taken up a role as an associate researcher at the MED (Portugal), part of a highly international competitive individual postdoctoral contract (CEEC - 4th Edition) promoted by FCT-Portugal, which has allowed to him to establish and lead a new research line on wildfire biogeochemistry at the UÉvora. Since 2021, he is President of International Network of Forest Fire (FUEGORED). NTJM has been member of 8 research projects, has developed 5 stays abroad, for a total of 60 months, in prestigious foreign research institutions and is actively involved in 5 Scientific networks. These activities increased his international experience and supplemented his technical know-how. His scientific and teaching track record comprises 80 peer-reviewed publications: i) 44 articles in SCI journals (98% in Q1; 18 in D1, and 13 as 1st author); ii) 23 articles in non-SCI journals; and iii) 7 book chapters. He has >100 contributions to congresses, including 5 seminars as invited lecturer; 8 travel awards and 4 best communication awards. He is editorial board member of the Spanish Journal of Soil and Science, and guest-editor of 4 special issues (Applied Science, IJPEGH, SOIL and Front. For. Glob. Change). He has >100 lecturing hours (USeville and UÉvora) and experience in supervising students, with 2 completed MSc and 1 ongoing PhD these. Currently, he has reviewed more than 45 scientific journals included in SCI and is vocal member of the IIFA-UÉvora.
