Gil Gonçalves graduated in 2003 in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and obtained a Master's degree in Materials Science (EMMS, Joint European Master's Programme) in 2008. In 2012 he received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro with a thesis dedicated to nanocomposite materials for biomedical application. After obtaining a Marie Curie research fellowship in 2016, he started working at the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona-High Council of Spanish Research (ICMAB-CSIC) on the development of ultra-sensitive nanotherapeutic anticancer agents for neutron capture therapy (H2020-MSCA-IF-2015). He was a short-term visitor on various occasions at the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Energy (LENA, University of Pavia) and the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Trieste. Currently, he is working at the Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA, University of Aveiro) as a researcher on the development of new graphene-based nanocomposite materials with applications in many different fields: Graphene-based porous structures for heterogeneous catalysis (Catalysis) and water purification (Environment), three-dimensional graphene scaffolds for biomedical applications (Biomaterials), nanostructured graphene substrates for selective biomolecules detection (Sensors) and carbon-based nanoplatforms for detection and therapy of cancer cells (Therapeutic agent). Dr. Gil has (co-)authored numerous scientific papers (h-index 28 and >3300 citations (Scopus)) and communications at national and international conferences and he is a regular reviewer for high-impact scientific journals in the field of multifunctional carbon nanomaterials. He is a member of the editorial board of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) in the field of Chemical Physics.

2023/06/02 Herein, a new concept based on carbon nanomaterials that seal 6Li active NCT nuclides is investigated. The 6Li active species are located in the inner cavity of the nanocarrier (carbon nanohorns or carbon nanotubes) and therefore, completely protected from the biological environment, avoiding toxicity and degradation. After encapsulation of the active cargo, the external surface of the nanocarrier is modified for improved biocompatibility. The developed 6Li-filled carbon nanohorns offered the possibility to explore 6Li compounds as active NCT agents ICMAB NEWs
2023/03/24 O trabalho de investigação multidisciplinar, desenvolvido por um consórcio internacional coordenado por investigadores da Universidade de Aveiro (UA), permitiu pela primeira vez desenvolver uma nova abordagem terapêutica de cancro baseada na captura de neutrões por lítio (LiNCT). Para isso, foram exploradas nanocápsulas de carbono, capazes de acomodar elevadas concentrações de lítio enriquecido (6Li), por forma a promover a destruição efetiva das células tumorais após irradiação por neutrões.
