João Cruz completed the Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics in 2007 by Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL). Authored/co-authored more than 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals and supervised/co-supervised 1 Ph.D. thesis and 10 M.Sc. dissertations. The main scientific area of research and activities is Nuclear Physics applied to Materials Science and Astrophysics, with focus on composition depth profiling and structure characterization using the Total IBA concept [simultaneous and self-consistent use of several IBA (Ion Beam Analysis ) techniques]; Software development; Cross-sections determination. Research subjects include the: i) non-destructive study of ancient metallic artifacts, ii) software development for PIGE analysis of in-depth homogeneous or heterogeneous samples (PIGE is also a IBA technique and stands for Particle Induced Gamma-ray Emission), iii) measurement of nuclear cross-sections with relevance to astrophysics, fusion reactors technology and to material, biomedical, environmental, and cultural heritage sciences. João Cruz has extensive teaching experience having lectured courses on Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Vibrations and Waves, Geophysics, Nuclear Physics, Radiation in Space and Radiation and Radiotherapy for several Engineering degrees with emphasis to the Physical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering degrees of FCT (Faculty of Sciences and Technology) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. These teaching activities comprise both theoretical lectures and supervision of laboratory experiment classes. João Cruz is also involved in management duties and outreach activities at the FCT-UNL Physics Department.
