Patrícia Carneiro (PC) holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, University of Porto, and is Scientific Manager at P.CCC - Porto. Comprehensive Cancer Centre, at the Epithelial Interactions in Cancer group, I3S-Institute for Investigation and Innovation in Health. In this context, PC has been able to consolidate key skills in scientific management, with responsibilities including liaising with the consortium partners, monitoring/reporting progression of the workplan and coordinating budget execution. Previously, she completed her Master in Biology and Biological Sciences in 2002 at Washington University in Saint Louis and her Bachelor in BSc. Human Genetics in 1998 at University of Leeds, School of Biomedical Sciences. Patrícia´s PhD thesis revealed important insights regarding the mitochondrial respiratory chain and its role in ROS production. This education/scientific mobility was pivotal to develop her capacity to lead projects in an independent way and her scientific reasoning skills. More so, it awarded her with an extensive background in molecular and cellular biology techniques, as well as in functional genetics approaches. During her studies abroad, PC also acquired dissemination experience, both at Leeds University and WashU, where she served as Teaching Assistant for undergraduate courses focused in Developmental Biology. Since 2012, PC has been undertaking her postdoctoral work in the Epithelial Interactions in Cancer group, at IPATIMUP/i3S, where she shifted to cancer research . PC has been investigating E-cadherin associated signalling behind the predominant increased risk for stomach cancer in Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC). Further, PC has been devoted to understand the mechanisms of epithelial cell invasion and, in this context, she has identified key molecules associated to cancer cell invasion and E-cadherin dysfunction. During this period, PC acquired a great deal of experience in the oncobiology field, has participated in 12 research projects and has been involved in the supervision of undergraduates and one PhD student. Of note, PC has significantly contributed towards attracting competitive funding for the group, namely in the framework of COMPETE 2020 and Norte 2020. In this context, PC has been crucial in the management of the funding and bureaucracy. In 2019, PC participated in the International Gastric Cancer Linkage Consortium consensus meeting to define the new guidelines for clinical management of HDGC, reflecting her international recognition in the field of E-cadherin and gastric cancer development. Since 2020, PC is an Invited Assistant at the Department of Bioengineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, where she has been actively involved in the coordination of EIT Health Programmes, namely MTIH (Master in Technological Innovation in Health) and HMDA (Health and Medical Data Analytics), and of the ERASMUS MUNDUS NeuroData project in collaboration with several European Universities and Bar-Ilan University from Israel. This participation in EIT Health activities has awarded PC important know how concerning the Knowledge Triangle strategy that integrates training with innovation projects and the creation and acceleration of companies. Importantly, PC has developed expertize in budget and strategic coordination, as well as skills associated with promotion of sustainability of health systems. PC has 24 international peer-reviewed publications (7 as first-author) with an h-index 13. Further, PC has attended several national/international meetings (4 oral presentations) and has participated in outreach activities organized by the institutions where she has worked.
