Régis Santos holds a PhD in Biological Sciences (Zoology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2016), with part of his doctoral research conducted at CIIMAR (Portugal), and a Master’s in Fisheries Resources from the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (2012). Since 2017, he has been based at the University of the Azores, where he is currently Assistant Professor in Fisheries at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, Faculty of Sciences and Technology. He coordinates the Fisheries Research Group and leads work on population dynamics, stock assessment, and marine governance. His expertise has been instrumental in national and EU-level biodiversity indicator reporting, technical support to the Azorean Government, and international collaborations with ICES, FAO, and IUCN. He contributes to scientific advice on small pelagic, deep-sea and elasmobranch stock assessments through ICES working groups and is the regional focal point for key sustainability indicators under international sustainability commitments (e.g., UN Agenda 2030, EU MSFD). His professional trajectory spans Latin America, Africa, and Europe in roles across research, consultancy, and policy advisory. He is also actively engaged in academic teaching and supervision, currently coordinating seven university-level courses and advising a diverse team of MSc and PhD students. His interdisciplinary profile is strengthened by a formal certification in Project Management (IPMA® Level D), which supports his leadership in research projects and stakeholder engagement. With over 160 scientific and technical outputs, his work has helped shape marine policy, capacity building, and sustainable fisheries management across regions.

2015 - 2015 The Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) is a simultaneous sampling campaign of the world’s oceans which took place (for the first time) on the summer solstice (June 21st) in the year 2014 and was repeated in 2015.
