Gianluca Polese is Associate Professor of Zoology at the University of Naples ¿Federico II¿, Italy. He was trained in Natural Science as a graduate and in Evolutionary Biology as a doctoral student at the University of Naples, then enrolled in the Neuroscience program at the Michigan State University as a postdoctoral fellow. He is a Zoologist and my central interest is in the evolution of neural structures and their role in behavior. His research focuses on changes in the olfactory system throughout vertebrate and invertebrate evolution working on different models (Cephalopod, Fish, Amphibian, Reptile, and Mammalian). He is investigating chemosensory-guided behavior. This includes studies of chemical signaling in courtship and mating behavior, parental care and examining the role of chemical senses in foraging behavior as well as attempts to isolate the compounds involved. He is using a variety of approaches to examine the function and odor response properties of the olfactory system with the goal of determining whether different portions of the olfactory system carry different types of information or function in different behavioral contexts. Taking a broad, integrative approach to these problems, he is trying to gain a better understanding of how chemoreception evolved in different taxa, and how it mediates behavior. The structure of the meiofauna community related to the environmental chemical contest had also attracted his curiosity. From a pilot study started almost by chance, he has started to work on meiofauna in parallel with his previous research line. Life among sediments is a fascinating hided world that actually roles most of the life that we can see during a scuba dive. Attending a summer school or any other kind of training program focused on this topic will help to develop and work more consistently in this marvel microscopic world. Last but not least, as the chemical compounds rule the marine environments, the emerging problem of anthropogenic pollutants brought his attention to the effects that such chemicals can have oh animal health status. The Histological experience acquired at the beginning of his researcher career tuned useful to check the histopathological effect of different pollutants on target tissues of index species.
