Dr Lúcia Santos research has been developed in the Environmental Chemistry field, focusing on i) the development of innovative analytical methods to study the sources and fate of emerging contaminants (ECs) (e.g., pharmaceuticals, microplastics) in the environment; ii) monitoring the fate of ECs and their removal by innovative and conventional wastewater treatment technologies; and in the Ecotoxicology field by iii) linking the environmental exposure to ECs with the impact to non-target organisms in terms of toxicity, bioaccumulation, biotransformation and metabolic changes; and iv) studying the risks to human health. In 2013, she completed her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences – Analytical Chemistry Specialty at the University of Porto (Portugal) with distinction. During her PhD she was supported by a competitive individual PhD grant funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). She did two short-term stays at the Charles University (Czech Republic) (4 months) and at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) (Spain) (1 month and a half). After her PhD, she was postdoctoral fellow at CIIMAR (Portugal) (2013-2015) and at REQUIMTE/ICETA (Portugal) (2015-2106). In 2016, she moved to ICRA (Spain), after being awarded with the highly competitive Juan de la Cierva – Formación (2016-2018) and Juan de la Cierva – Incorporación (2018-2021) fellowships from MICINN (Spain). Later, her research was supported by a European H2020 project (2021-2023) and an advanced postdoctoral researcher contract on the line of Water Quality and Safety of ICRA (2023-2024). During her postdoctoral stage, she consolidated her research on the sources, fate, and environmental impact of ECs, and gained knowledge in non-target analysis, which she applied to develop new analytical tools based on advanced HRMS-based workflows to identify unknown metabolites; clarify pathways of metabolization of ECs by aquatic organisms; and assess changes in their metabolic profile. Since 2018, Dr Lúcia Santos implemented and led a research line at ICRA on the analysis, fate and risks of microplastics in the environment, participating in the international network PRIORITY (EU Cost Action CA20101, 2021-2025). In the frame of this Cost Action, she did a short-term scientific mission at the University of Pisa (Italy). In September 2024 she incorporated the research team of IRNASA-CSIC at her current position after being awarded with the prestigious “Ramón y Cajal” researcher fellowship. Presently, she is implementing and leading a new and emerging research line at IRNASA-CSIC on the impact of MPs and associated contaminants in agroecosystems. She has a strong network of collaborations with various national and international researchers. Overall, she published 54 peer-reviewed articles (11 as first author; 11 as corresponding and leading scientist; 27 with international institutions) and 4 book chapters, with a total of 4014 citations (h-index 26, Scopus). She participated in 9 R&D projects: PI of a RyC project; scientific coordinator of 1 MICINN National Project (Spain); task leader of 1 European H2020 project; researcher of 3 Portuguese National Projects (FCT), and 3 European projects (ERA-NET.SIINN, PRIMA, JPI). She was responsible of 3 R&D contracts. Her work was presented at more than 60 national and international conferences (28 oral communications, 10 as invited speaker). She supervised 3 PhD theses (2 on-going), 6 MSc, 3 BSc, the internship of 1 BSc student, various visiting researchers (6 EU countries, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay). She participated in dissemination activities to society in Portugal and Spain. She was Guest Editor of a Special Issue in the open access journal Water Emerging Contaminants & Nanoplastics, and evaluator of the activity of research-oriented institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Since January 2024 she is member of the Editorial Board of STOTEN.
