Sara R. D. Gamelas is currently a post-doc fellow at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). She obtained her PhD in Chemistry in 2024 at the University of Aveiro (UA), her Master's degree in chemistry in 2016, and her bachelor's in Biochemistry in 2014 from the same university. Her interest in Organic Chemistry, combined with the biomedical field, was acquired during her bachelor's degree in Biochemistry at the University of Aveiro (Aveiro, Portugal), where she developed her final project regarding immobilized N-confused porphyrins to use as photosensitizers in the photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of microorganisms. During her Master's thesis in Chemistry (2016), she did an Erasmus internship in Belgium to investigate the ability of photoactive molecules (tetracationic porphyrins), which she synthesized in Aveiro, to be used as photosensitizers for the Photodynamic Therapy of cancer. During that internship, she acquired experience in cell culture, immuno-detection techniques, photodynamic therapy (PDT) in cancer cells, RT-PCR, and PAGE detection. In 2017-2018, Sara was a research fellow at QOPNA and LAQV-REQUIMTE (UA), holding a research BI grant from the FCT project PTDC/QEQ-SUP/5355/2014 under the guidance of PI Doctor Leandro M. O. Lourenço, working on "supramolecular functionalization of carbon nanostructures with porphyrin and phthalocyanine derivatives for sustainable photoinduced energy- and electronic-transfer materials." In 2018-2019, Sara was a research fellow at the same institution, holding a research BI grant from the FCT project PTDC/QUI-QOR/31770/2017 under the guidance of PI Doctor Leandro M. O. Lourenço, working on "imidazole pyrene porphyrin- and phthalocyanine-carbon nanostructure materials assembled through supramolecular interactions for energy- and electronic-transference in photovoltaic solar cells integrated in smart devices." In 2019, Sara was awarded by FCT with her PhD scholarship (SFRH/BD/143549/2019) to work on synthesizing Phthalocyanines and porphyrins for energy transfer processes and biomedical applications. In 2023, Sara was awarded a Fulbright and a FLAD scholarship to work in Dr. Pereira's lab at Washington University School of Medicine in the United States. She developed part of her PhD thesis using click chemistry to prepare porphyrin–antibody bioconjugates in vivo and in vitro for dual imaging modality (PET and optical imaging). She acquired experience in cell culture, mice work, modification of antibodies, and preparation of bioconjugates. Her publication output includes 15 peer-reviewed articles (10 in the Q1, 5 in Q2 and 13 as the first author), 19 oral (12 as presenter), and 17 poster communications (8 as presenter) at conferences. Sara was a participant/organizer of 6 dissemination activities to the public. She was also responsible for tutoring/mentoring 3 BSc students (2019, 2021 and 2024) at LAQV-UA. The students focused on developing novel phthalocyanines or porphyrin to be used as photosensitizers for the PDI of microorganisms of bacteria in their planktonic or biofilm form. Sara was involved in the peer-review of 3 research articles in 2023 and 2024. Also, the editors of Molecules awarded her article "N-Confused porphyrin immobilized on solid supports: Synthesis and metal ions sensing efficacy" to appear as a magazine cover (volume 23, issue 4) in 2018. Currently, her main scientific research interests include (1) synthesis and characterization of porphyrins and phthalocyanines for theranostic applications; (2) click chemistry with tetrazines and TCO; (3) Labeling and antibody conjugation (DFO, TCO, and ALEXA); (4) Photodynamic therapy of cancer cells and microorganisms; (5) Immunofluorescence assays using fluorescently conjugated antibodies.
