Irene Peano holds a PhD in Social Anthropology awarded by the University of Cambridge in 2011, an MPhil in Social Anthropological Research (2006) and a BA Honours (First Class) in Social Anthropology (Archaeology and Anthropology Tripos, 2004), also awarded by the University of Cambridge. Her doctoral dissertation, titled 'Ambiguous bonds: A contextual study of Nigerian sex labour in Italy' and supervised by Prof. Marilyn Strathern, is the result of 18 months of fieldwork, of which 12 in Benin City (Nigeria) and 6 in Turin (Italy), and addresses the play between regimes of transparency and practices of secrecy in relation to anti-trafficking dispositifs and relations of debt bondage. Between 2012 and 2014 she was Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Bologna, where she subsequently held another postdoctoral fellowship between 2015 and 2016, always working in collaboration with Sandro Mezzadra as the Scientist in Charge. During this period, she focused on forms of migrant resistance and on the analysis of changing and multiple forms of governance in the EU border regime, starting from the experiences of Nigerian sex workers in administrative detention and then exploring other domains, particularly those of migrant farm labour. In 2015, thanks to a COST grant, she researched the articulation of immigration and prostitution regulations and their effects in the Spanish context, for comparative purposes. She also engaged in an analysis of the relations between sex work and other forms of migrant labour, especially as they obtain in Italian agro-industrial enclaves, from the point of view both of their governance and of their possibilities for autonomous subjectivation. This led her to enlarge the field of research to include also Eastern European farm and sex workers, particularly from Romania. Between 2016 and 2017 she held a 3-month visiting professorship at the University of Bucharest Research Institute, during which she also engaged in field research on these topics, managing to retrace some of the networks of farm-labour recruitment between Romania and Italy. From March 2017 until June 2021, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, within the ERC project 'The colour of labour: The racialised lives of migrants'. In this period, she has focused on the triangulations between subjectivity, genealogy and (spatial, racialised, gendered, legal, symbolic) containment as they relate to the control of migrant farm and sex labour in Italian agro-industrial enclaves. Since 2021, thanks to a grant from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT), she is a Research Fellow at the same institute, where she is currently completing a monograph on the genealogies of spatial forms of containment in agro-industrial enclaves, and resistances to them.
