Ana Catarina Branco completed her PhD degree in Materials Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon in January 2024. She is a materials engineer specialized in biomaterials for biomedical applications. She has been member of the BIOMAT Research Group at IST since 2017. She has expertise on advanced characterization techniques (atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, 3D scanning, rheometry, mechanical and tribological testing, wettability, controlled drug release, FTIR, XRD, TGA, DSC). She has co-authored 20 published papers in high impact journals (11 as first author) that have >440 citations (source: SCOPUS), and has 2 more papers under review. Her h-index is currently 10. She presented work in more than 20 national and international conferences and was awarded twice for best communications (1 oral and 1 poster presentation). She has supervised MSc students and junior researchers on the development, sterilization and characterization of hydrogels for cartilage replacement, and also on dental materials, coordinating research & experimental work, and co-authoring resulting publications. She is currently guest editor of a special issue in Gels: "Next-Generation Hydrogels: Bridging Biology and Engineering for Medical Breakthroughs", managing scientific peer review and editorial processes. For 1 year (Feb 2024-Feb2025), she was a postdoctoral researcher and worked in the scope of a project related to the development of biomimetic platforms for the treatment of chronic wounds. She has been teaching in the areas of Materials Science and Tribology at Instituto Superior Técnico since 2021, and has been consistently recognized for excellence in teaching and mentorship.
