Rui M.C. da Silva completed the Ph.D. in Physics in 1993 by Universidade de Lisboa (Faculty of Sciences). Authored/co-authored 120 articles in peer-reviewd journals, and supervised/co-supervised 7 Ph.D. theses, 8 M.Sc. dissertations and 8 Lic. graduation dissertations. The main scientific area of research and activities is Materials Science and Engineering, with focus on the modification and characterization of materials with ion beams, through: ion implantation, IBA (Ion Beam Analysis) composition depth profiling and structure characterization; research subjects include light alloys, complex alloys (in particular High Entropy Alloys), phase transformations; doped oxides and oxides with embedded nanoparticles (namelly large band-gap TCOs), solid electrolytes. Complementary to the application and development of ion beam based analytical techniques, developed and implemented automation control of IBA experiments with SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisiton) software, data and metadata structure and recording formats and conversions. and data pre-processing software methods. Other scientific research interests and activities focus on Surface Science and Condensed Matter Physics, namely transport phenomena (electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity) and magnetic properties. Rui M.C. da Silva has extensive teaching experience having lectured courses on Vibrations and Waves for several Engineering degrees and courses on Nuclear Physics to the Physical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering degrees of FCT (Faculty of Sciences and Technology) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Nuclear Physics teaching comprised both theoretical lectures at introductory level and supervision of practical laboratory experiment classes. A long standing collaboration has been maintained with the Department of Conservation and Restauration of UNL through the teaching of applications of IBA techniques, EBS (Elastic Backscattering Spectrometry), NRA (Nuclear Reactions Analysis) and PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission spectrometry), both at the theoretical introductory level and at the demonstration level in the ion beam acceleratiors laboratory. He regularly takes students enrolled in the Advanced Experimental Physics Laboratories syllabus from Physics Enginneering of IST (Instituto Superior Técnico).
