Joana Galvão Duarte holds a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with distinction from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra (FFUC). Her academic path reflects a strong inclination toward interdisciplinary and practical applications, demonstrated by her initiative in undertaking extracurricular internships at Bluepharma Indústria Farmacêutica and the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia (Kmetijski inštitut Slovenije). In addition to these experiences, she completed two curricular internships—one in the Quality Control Department of Bluepharma and another in a community pharmacy. Her professional journey extends beyond academia, marked by her contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic as a technician in the Laboratory of Clinical Analysis at the University of Coimbra. She also volunteered for the national health hotline, Saúde24, and collaborated with the Quality Control Unit of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UCQFarma, FFUC). She further developed practical and patient-facing experience as a community pharmacist. In 2023, Joana returned to academia as a collaborating researcher at REQUIMTE/LAQV (Group of Pharmaceutical Technology, FFUC) and UCQFarma while maintaining her volunteer role at Saúde24. Since January 2024, she has been pursuing her PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS), University of Porto. Her current research centers on the innovative application of biomaterials processed through Additive Manufacturing, integrated with inverse engineering strategies for wound care. Joana has authored six publications in high-impact (Q1) international journals. Her most recent first-author article, “The Printed Path to Healing: Advancing Wound Dressings through Additive Manufacturing”, was published in Advanced Healthcare Materials (January 2025). Furthermore, the graphical abstract she designed for “Regulation and Safety of Cosmetics: Pre- and Post-Market Considerations for Adverse Events and Environmental Impact” was selected as the cover image for Cosmetics journal (Vol. 11, Issue 6, December 2024). According to SCOPUS (2023), 100% of her publications are in Q1 journals and among the top 25% of the most cited documents globally, with one-third resulting from international collaboration. To support her scientific growth, Joana has completed several Nature Masterclasses, including Writing a Research Paper, Writing and Publishing a Review Paper, Persuasive Grant Writing, and Building a Strong Online Researcher Profile. She is currently a collaborating member of the Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials, and Processes (CEMMPRE), recognized as Excellent, and a researcher on the Drivolution – Transição para a Fábrica do Futuro project. Her involvement focuses on the synthesis, processing, and characterization of materials for abiotic–biotic interface applications. With a strong foundation in pharmaceutical sciences and hands-on experience in laboratory methods, material characterization, and data analysis, Joana brings a translational and patient-centered perspective to biomaterials research. Passionate about scientific communication and biomedical innovation, she is dedicated to advancing therapeutic solutions that bridge advanced material processing and regenerative medicine.
