I am a biologist with expertise in Aquaculture. During my 5 yr-BSc in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, I became particularly interested in fish physiology. This led me to complete an honours project at the Ocean Sciences Centre (Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada), where I gained experience in respirometry, thermal tolerance, and swimming physiology. Wanting to apply this knowledge to a practical context, I turned my focus toward aquaculture as an economic activity where fish physiology could have direct impact. I returned to Portugal and sought hands-on experience in the aquaculture industry, now in Madeira island, but soon realized the need to deepen my theoretical foundation. I therefore pursued an MSc in Aquaculture at the University of Barcelona, which allowed me to consolidate both my academic and practical experience in fish farming. Back in Portugal, in 2012, I began a PhD in Animal Science (ICBAS, University of Porto), specializing in fish nutrition. My research focused on dietary protein and the potential for nutritional programming in fish larvae, conducted jointly between CCMAR, ICBAS, and CIIMAR, in close collaboration with the industrial partner SPAROS. In 2016, I moved to Madeira Island, where I initially worked on assessing environmental risks for farmed fish. More recently, my research has shifted back to fish nutrition and health. Over the years, I have built an extensive network of international and national R&D and industrial partners. I am currently based in Madeira under a collaboration protocol between CIIMAR and the Madeira Fisheries Directorate, working on the identification of functional ingredients to enhance fish robustness and welfare.
