Márcia A. Liz graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Porto in 2000. Her scientific career began internationally with an internship at Sugen Company (San Francisco, CA) under the "CONTACTO" program. During her PhD (2003-2008, at IBMC-Porto, with work developed at Stanford and São Paulo Universities), Márcia unraveled transthyretin (TTR) as a novel metalloprotease, received a Gulbenkian Young Investigator Award, and published four first-author research papers (J Biol Chem, 2004; J Lipid Res, 2007; Biochem J, 2009; Biochem J, 2012), three invited reviews (Cell Mol Life Sci, 2005; FEBS J, 2010; IUBMB Life, 2010), and one book chapter. As a postdoctoral researcher (2008-2013, Nerve Regeneration Group, IBMC), she described MSC transplantation as a therapeutic option for leukodystrophies (Stem Cells 2011; Cell Transplant 2014), unraveled the impact of microtubule regulators on CNS regeneration (BMC Biol 2014), received FCT funding as PI, supervised one MSc thesis, one research fellow, two undergraduate students, and co-supervised two MSc theses. Márcia then secured an auxiliary researcher position at IBMC/i3S, supported by ON2.QREN (2013-2015), an FCT Investigator contract (2017-2022), and an FCT Institutional CEEC (April 2022-December 2024). Within this position, she started her independent research as project leader of the ND Team within the Nerve Regeneration Group, focusing on the impact of prone-to-aggregate proteins on the neuronal cytoskeleton in neurodegenerative disorders (Prog Neurobiol 2016, Front Cell Dev Biol 2020). This research program, for which she secured multiple grants as PI (ON2.QREN, FCT, Pfizer, research agreements with private companies), led to several important discoveries: 1. Unraveling mechanisms underlying TTR impact on neuronal pathophysiology (senior authorships): TTR proteolysis underlies its neuroprotective effect on Alzheimer's disease (Neurobiol Aging 2017); TTR is a regulator of neuronal microtubule dynamics (Front Cell Dev Biol 2021); Amyloidogenic TTR interacts with actin cytoskeleton regulators (Sci Rep 2020); Actin dysfunction precedes neurodegeneration in TTR amyloid polyneuropathy via dysregulation of Rac1 (bioRxiv 2025; manuscript under peer review Cell Reports). 2. Work showing that a-Synuclein induces cofilin pathology mediating hippocampal spine dysfunction in the context of Lewy Body disorders (senior author: Cell Death Dis 2024). 3. Demonstrating the impact of cytoskeleton regulators on axonal growth (co-author: JCI 2020; Front Cell Neurosci 2019). 4. Identifying novel therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative disorders (co-author: Eur J Med Chem 2021, ACS Chem Neurosci 2021). Her research on cytoskeleton dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases has been selected for oral communication at national and international conferences. In 2024, Márcia Liz established herself as a tenured Assistant researcher at the Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB) at ICBAS, University of Porto, reinforcing her role as an independent researcher within a clinical and translational research environment. At UMIB, her research continues to focus on axonal dysfunction in neuropathies and neurodegenerative diseases, expanding her translational work with clinical collaborations. Márcia is currently supervising one junior researcher, one PhD and one MSc student, co-supervising one PhD research fellow, and, as a project leader, has previously supervised two PhD students, two postdocs, seven MSc students, five research fellows, and nine undergraduate students. She is also an active peer reviewer for international journals, participated as a grant reviewer (Parkinson's UK), and has been involved in the organization of workshops, scientific meetings, and outreach activities. Additionally, she is a lecturer in the PhD/MSc Program in Neuroscience (FMUP). Márcia Liz has published 25 papers (9 as first author, 7 as senior author), with 853 citations and an h-index of 17.
