Márcia Ventura graduated in Chemical Engineering in 2001 from Instituto Superior Técnico at the University of Lisbon (IST-UL). She completed a Master’s in Physics Engineering, specializing in Applied Nuclear Physics, in 2003 at the Faculty of Sciences, Univ. of Lisbon, and earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2008 from (IST-UL). Her Ph.D. was supported by a four-year fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), during which she conducted research to advance analytical methods for determining and identifying selenium in food samples. Her Ph.D. work resulted in 6 scientific articles as the corresponding author in indexed international journals. In 2008, she received a postdoctoral fellowship through a highly competitive FCT call, joining the LAQV/REQUIMTE research center in collaboration with VICARTE. Her postdoctoral research (2008–2014) focused on developing new methods for coloring glass using sol-gel and layer-by-layer assembly with metal nanoparticles. This research resulted in 4 journal articles (being corresponding author in 3) and 1 book chapter. During this period, she also published an additional article as the corresponding author and contributed to a national patent related to synthesizing biopolymer-derived aerogels. From 2008 to 2014, she supported laboratory classes in Physical-Chemistry Techniques and the Glass Science and Technology course within the Glass Science Master’s program. Between 2014 and 2016, Dr. Ventura paused her career to care for her daughter. She resumed her professional activities in 2016 with a research fellowship, working on a project aimed at adding value to biomass. Since then, she has held 2 research contracts with NOVA FCT, focusing on three primary research areas. The work carried out in these areas was essentially (i) using natural polymers to develop porous aerogel materials for molecule adsorption and controlled drug release, (ii) developing selenium-enriched, microalgae-based food supplements, and (iii) anaerobic digestion for biomethane and dark fermentation for biohydrogen. Since 2016, she has taught Laboratory Techniques in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Bioenergy in the Renewable Energy Engineering Master’s course at NOVA FCT, and Biorefineries and Biofuels courses in the Petroleum Technologies degree at ESTB-IPS. As part of the teaching team for the Bioenergy course in the Master’s program in Renewable Energy Engineering at NOVA FCT, Dr. Ventura was recently awarded the Pedagogical Innovation Award by the Rectorate of NOVA Univ. of Lisbon (Nov 2024) recognizing her commitment to innovative teaching practices and excellence in education. Since 2022, she has served as an External Evaluator for the Polish National Science Centre in the Production and Processes Engineering panel. She has also served on the jury for 15 Master’s and 2 Ph.D. theses. Her collaborations with colleagues from Spain, the UK, Norway, and Algeria have led to co-authored publications and co-supervised students. Dr. Ventura currently maintains active collaborations with several entities, including companies and research centers such as Allmicroalgae, Arborea Biofoods, Valorsul, GreenCoLab, and C2TN, reflecting her commitment to promoting innovation and applied research within industry sectors. She is currently enrolled in a postgraduate course in Science Management and Policy to complement her research work, essential for securing future national and international funding. Since 2016, she has published 14 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, contributed to 2 book chapters, presented 2 conference papers and 12 conference posters. She has supervised 11 Master’s theses and one Ph.D. thesis and is currently supervising two Ph.D. theses, demonstrating her scientific independence. Since the beginning of her career, Dr. Ventura has published a total of 38 publications, which have garnered 450 citations, with an H-index of 14 (Scopus).

2023 - 2024 On September, 2023 and 2024, M. Ventura participated in the European Researchers' Night. During this event, several researchers engage with the public, particularly young audiences, to showcase the research projects they are involved in, with a focus on promoting sustainability (social, economic, or environmental) and inclusion. M. Ventura was part of a team of researchers presenting a proposal for water decontamination involving the ongoing MAR2PROTECT project.

2021 - 2022 - M. Ventura participated in the "Verão com Ciência" initiative during the years 2021 and 2022. This initiative, created by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) in collaboration with the Direção Geral de Ensino Superior (DGES), provided special support to stimulate the development of "Summer Schools" at Polytechnic Institutes and Universities. As part of this program, from August until October, M. Ventura supervised two students in 2021, and another one in 2022.
