In the last 5 years, Sandra's research work has abetted the design of novel platforms for the purification and application of several health-related biomolecules. Until June 2002, Sandra Bernardo was a post-doctoral researcher at the Health Sciences Research Centre in the University of Beira Interior (CICS-UBI), under the project - PUREmiRSILs: Ionic Liquid-based supports for pre-miRNAs purification targeting Alzheimer's disease - in which she has been collaborated in the supervision of MSc and PhD students/applicants. Currently she is the NMR lab technician at CICS-UBI and in the last months, had gathered additional experience in equipment maintenance, lab management and NMR sample preparation, acquisition, and processing, being able to attend 2 excellent courses on this field, watching Bruker webinars online and helping students to perform their experiments. Sandra studied Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2013, she completed a MSc degree in Biotechnology by the Technical University of Lisbon, where she had gain knowledge and laboratorial experience on protein purification techniques and monoclonal antibodies manufacturing industry, by working at BioSeparations Lab from BioEngeneering Research Group, IST-UTL, to carry out her master thesis work, which consisted on purifying monoclonal antibodies by aqueous-two phase systems using a dual-affinity ligand molecule (LYTAG-Protein A). From March 2014 to February 2018, S.C. Bernardo joined a PhD scholarship granted by European Research Council Grant (ERC-2013-StG-337753) in Chemical Engineering Doctoral program at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. During almost 5 years, she worked as a research grantee under the framework of the European Research Council project - IgYPurTech - IgY Technology: A Purification Platform using Ionic-Liquid-Based Aqueous Biphasic Systems. Her work involved the development of different purification strategies for polyclonal antibodies from egg yolk. Due to the outstanding results regarding the developed purification process, a patent application (PT115028) was requested to INPI in 2018 (entitled Processo para purificar um anticorpo a partir da gema de ovo) and granted in 2021. In 2019, a patent application (PCT/IB2019/057993) was filed to WIPO, whereas a family of patent applications were requested (WO2020058936, US20210253632, EP3854813 and JP2022501375). Besides this acquired experience in the patent submission, being one of the inventors in an international patent application, in the last 5 years Sandra also published, as first author, 2 original articles, 2 book chapters and 1 review article. Additionally, she was the first author presenting in 4 oral communications in relevant conferences in the field (ESBES, ECAB, ISPPP). She has also collaborated in 4 projects: FP7/2007-2013/ERC-Grant-337753, 4318/40851YL and POCI-01-0247-FEDER-007678 at CICECO-UA; and POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029496 at CICS-UBI. Recently, the candidate has been added to the team of CICS-UBI, participating institution of a consortium in a EIC Pathfinder project recently approved (Yscript-101047214). In addition, in the last 5 years she participated in an intensive entrepreneurship Program, promoted by COTEC, at Porto Business School, where her PurAvTec team presented a business idea (Anticorpos de aves: uma solução para salvar vidas) based on the patented purification technology. Also, in 2018 the project PurAvTec was distinguished in the Health category, upon a pitch presentation (entitled Desenvolvimento de um produto eficaz no combate a bactérias resistentes a antibióticos) at Born from knowledge Ideas program promoted by ANI.
