Joana Tomás Ferreira

Joana Tomás Ferreira is a modern materials conservator specializing in the preservation of synthetic materials in cultural heritage. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. (2022–present) in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the NOVA School of Science and Technology (Portugal), supported by a 4-year FCT doctoral grant (2021.04565.BD). Her research focuses on synthetic-coated fabrics in fashion collections, addressing the urgent need for preventive conservation strategies for these fragile materials. She holds a BSc (2017) and an MSc (2020) in Conservation and Restoration from the same institution, where she specialized in the conservation of modern and contemporary materials. Since 2018, Joana has been actively involved in multidisciplinary and international projects dedicated to the study and conservation of plastics in museum collections. As a master’s student and later as a Research Assistant, she contributed to PlasCO2 – Green CO2 Technologies for the Cleaning of Plastics in Museums and Heritage Collections, where she explored a sustainable methodology using supercritical carbon dioxide for the consolidation of historical foams. She has also been a member of the projects Glossy Surfaces – The Conservation of TPUs in Fashion and InBloom – Investigating the Impact of Blooming on Polyurethane-Coated Fabrics to Support Conservation Decisions in Fashion and Design Collections, both of which address critical issues in the preservation of synthetic-coated textiles. In 2021, she expanded her professional experience through an Erasmus+ internship at the University of Glasgow (UK), where she further developed skills in the identification, documentation, and assessment of synthetic materials in archival contexts. Through her academic path and project involvement, Joana has collaborated with several museums and research groups, combining scientific investigation with practical conservation challenges. She aims to apply her expertise in material science and conservation practice to develop solutions for the care of synthetic materials in heritage collections.
