I am a qualified Biomedical Scientist with a passion for cancer research. During my prior studies I have focused in acquiring practical skills and expertise in biomedicine and cancer biology which are relevant for my long journey in pursuing a career in cancer research. During my MSc, I have worked with Dr. Luisa Helguero on a project centered on the involvement of SETD7 in the regulation of mammary epithelial cell’s proliferation and differentiation. Determined to pursue a career in cancer research, I enrolled on the MRes in Cancer Biology at the University of Dundee (UK), which I finished with honors in August 2017. My work at Prof. Kevin Hiom’s lab contributed to confirm the interaction of two nuclear proteins (Matrin 3 and RBM14) with known DNA repair proteins and was pioneer in establishing their recruitment to double-strand breaks. My current line of research is centered on the role of exosomes in cancer progression and in the modulation of the tumor microenvironment. I am working at i3S, alongside Dr. Sonia Melo’s group which has spiked my curiosity on pancreatic cancer and helped me develop my expertise in genetically engineered mouse models and orthotopic mouse models. Through the past year, I have also learned about the importance of cancer exosomes for the modulation of the tumor stroma, including the infiltration of immune cells, in different types of cancer. I have written a review article precisely tackling the major findings related to this area of study and highlighting the gaps that need to be addressed (DOI: 10.3390/ijms20030567). In summary, my previous academic path and research have demonstrated my motivation towards a career in cancer research that would give me the chance to have a lasting and positive impact on people’s lives. I am currently pursuing a PhD related to the role that exosomes play in cancer-driven immunomodulation which I believe could lead us to the discovery of new and potentially revolutionizing strategies for cancer treatment.
