Maria Concetta Lo Bosco

I am a Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. I'm currently working on the project "Neurodiversity in the workplace: an ethnography on inclusive employment policies (IEPs) and citizenship". This project aims to explore inclusive employment policies (IEPs) for neurodivergent people and how claims for inclusion and citizenship entangle notions of competence and self-sufficiency. Here I investigate governmental strategies and plans of work inclusion; the narratives shaping their design and implementation; and their impact on neurodivergent people¿s life. I have published on the subjects of autism and advocacy, mothering practices, care as gendered labor, fieldwork and emotions. I give courses on digital ethnography and medical anthropology at the graduate and post-graduate levels in Portugal. I supervise PhD students and mentor master and doctoral students in Portugal and Italy. From March 2018 to August 2022, I worked as Project Manager for "The Colour of Labour", funded by the European Research Council (ERC grant - AdG 695573). From 2018 to 2022 I collaborated on the Project "EXCEL. The Pursuit of Excellence. Biotechnologies, enhancement and body capital in Portugal" (FCT grant PTDC/SOC-ANT/30572/2017). I completed my PhD at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon in 2018. In my dissertation, I have explored parents' care experiences with autistic children, their advocacy journey, and the use of social networks as a political tool to promote disabled people's rights. From 2015 to 2017 I served as a coordinator of the MAYS-Medical Anthropology Young Scholars Network of the EASA. During my mandate, I organized 2 international conferences, coordinated its academic initiatives, and developed a new website (https://mayseasa.org), resulting in the recognition of MAYS as a reference network for early-career medical anthropologists in Europe. I am a member and treasurer of the EBANO collective, an artistic and curatorial collective that proposes to carry out site-specific projects and urban interventions through art supported by ethnographic research.
