Dr. Ivo Colmonero Costeira holds a PhD in Biosciences from Cardiff University, UK (2025). He is a conservation geneticist and co-founding member of the PRIMACTION conservation network. His research integrates population genomics and macrogenetics with primatology and socio-cultural approaches to conservation, with the overarching goal of improving evidence-based biodiversity monitoring and conservation policy across local and global scales. His work focuses primarily on West African primates, particularly guenon species, where he has led interdisciplinary conservation research combining genomics, ethnography and field ecology. This research produced the first conservation genetic baselines for guenon populations in the Bijagós Archipelago (Guinea-Bissau). He has published in high-quality peer-reviewed journals across conservation biology, molecular ecology, evolutionary biology and primatology, including Conservation Biology, Molecular Ecology, Evolutionary Applications, Scientific Reports, Primates and the International Journal of Primatology (9 publications, 4 as first author). His work has addressed topics such as genetic diversity, population demographic history, genetic erosion and capacity building. More recently, his research has expanded toward macrogenetics, focusing on the generality, biases and policy relevance of large-scale genetic indicators used in global biodiversity monitoring. He has attracted competitive funding to support fieldwork, genomic data generation and capacity building in species range countries. He is an active member of international research networks, including the Primate Conservation Sequencing Consortium and the GENOA COST Action. Alongside his research activities, he is engaged in teaching and supervision, including training workshops and mentoring of early-career researchers in population genetics.

Activity description Institution / Organization
2023/03/01 - 2023/04/01 Field expedition to the Cufada Lagoons Natural Park, Guinea-Bissau (1 months) The aim of the field expedition was to access the existence of the spot-nosed monkey in the region using a combination of ethnographic methods and species detection.
2022/04/01 - 2022/06/15 Field expedition to the islands of Formosa, Chedia, Nago, Canhabaque and Bubaque of the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau (3 months) The field expedition had two main objectives: 1) characterise the perceptions of non-Human primates by the Bijagó ethnic group and assessment of the local sociozoologic scale; 2) collection of fecal samples from ranging primate groups for genetic analysis.
