I am a Senior Researcher (Directrice de Recherche) at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). I am based at the Center for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (CEFE) in Montpellier, where I am head of the Department Dynamics and Conservation of Biodiversity. Before joining the CNRS, I obtained an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Lisbon in 1996, a Masters in Applied Mathematics from the same university in 1998, and a PhD in Ecology from the University of Sheffield (UK) in 2002. I was a research fellow at the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science at Conservation International (Washington DC, USA) from 2002 to 2005, and a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge (UK) from 2006 to 2008. I first joined the CNRS in 2009 as a Researcher (Chargée de Recherche), having been promoted to Senior Researcher (Directrice de Recherche) in 2016. I obtained an Habilitation to Direct Research from the University of Montpellier in 2015. I have co-authored 96 peer-reviewed publications (27 as first author; of which 91 papers & 5 book chapters), including in Science, Nature, Ecology Letters and PNAS which have been cited >27,000 times. My work has featured in >200 media articles worldwide, including in New Scientist, The Economist, BBC News, Financial Times, Time Magazine, The Guardian, Telegraph, Le Monde, Público, El Pais, Science Podcast. I have been awarded the CNRS 2022 Silver Medal, the CNRS 2013 Bronze Medal and the 2009 Marsh Award for Conservation Biology. I have given over 40 presentation as an invited or keynote speaker. I was the scientific coordinator of H2020-MSCA-ITN project Inspire4Nature, and PI of ANR project Management of Ocean Resources under Shifting Expectations – MORSE. I have supervised 2 postdoctoral researchers, 9 PhD students, 19 master students, 4 undergraduate students and 7 young researchers in short-term contracts. I have taught >120 hours of lectures at the undergraduate level, and > 150 at the Masters level. I am interested in understanding how biodiversity is distributed in space and in time, on the effects of human activities on those spatial and temporal patterns, and on the implications for biodiversity conservation. I mainly work at macroecological scales, by analyzing the distribution of many species across large spatial scales. Some of the research questions I am currently interested in: - Identifying priority areas for conservation, including protected areas and Key Biodiversity Areas; - Evaluating the effectiveness of conservation measures, including of protected areas; - Macroecology of bird migration; - Understanding species' sensitivity to anthropogenic pressures; - Understanding the historical human footprint on today’s ecosystems.
