María Flores-Tornero obtained a 5-year Biology degree at the University of Valencia (UV) in 2010, finishing with an Excellence Undergraduate Academic Performance Award. During her bachelor, she was awarded the prestigious science research initiation grant JAE-INTRO 2009 from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Becas-Colaboración from the Spanish government to further develop lab skills in plant research. She did internships in the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants (IBMCP), the Valencian Institute for Agronomical Research (IVIA) and the Department of Plant Biology of UV. During her MSc and PhD studies she explored plant metabolism and development. She has co-authored 2 book chapters and 22 research papers (9 as first author and 3 as corresponding) in high impact journals like Nature Plants, Molecular Plant, The Plant Cell, or Plant Physiology, among others. She also participated in 5 national and 12 international congresses, where she obtained awards for best oral (2013) and poster (2015, 2023) communications. In 2014 she designed her own scientific proposal to get funding from the German Service of Academic Exchange (DAAD) for a 6-months stay during her PhD in the group of Dr. Alisdair Fernie (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, Golm) to improve her knowledge on metabolomic and transcriptomic data analyses. In May 2016 she defended her PhD thesis with Outstanding Cum Laude with International Mention qualification. Then she got a postdoctoral position in the group of Prof. Stefanie Sprunck and Prof. Thomas Dresselhaus at the University of Regensburg to study the evolution of sexual plant reproduction as a part of the ERA-CAPS project EVOREPRO, coordinated by Dr. Jörg Becker (ITQB NOVA). During those years, she complemented her PhD experience on omic approaches with specific methodologies from the plant reproduction field. One of the main expertise she has developed is the manual isolation of plant gametes of dicotyledonous (Arabidopsis), monocotyledonous (maize and wheat) and basal angiosperms (Amborella trichopoda). This is a very challenging procedure but essential to explore the nature of these reproductive cells and their interaction to achieve fertilization. She has secured so far two highly competitive grants: a European Marie Curie (MSCA) to pursue her research on single-cell omics analysis of plant gametes, and a CEEC Junior Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus 2021 (4th Edition) from the Portugues FCT to develop natural in vitro fertilization systems. Her current H-factor is 12, with 424 citations, according to Web of Science. She has served as peer-reviewer for Molecular Plant, The Plant Cell, Plant Reproduction or Journal of Experimental Botany, among others. She is a visitor scientist in Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia (IGC) and has been also invited to deliver seminars in 3 international institutions. She is also member of the Scientific Committee of her host institution (ITQB NOVA), the Spanish Society of Plant Biology (SEBP) and of the International Association of Sexual Plant Reproduction Research (IASPRR), serving in the later as webmaster and social network manager of the scientific content in its official accounts in Twitter. Finally, as an important part of her professional development, she is regularly invited to lecturing in International PhD and Master programs and has enthusiastically participated in teaching theoretical and practical sessions. So far, she has been involved in the supervision of 1 junior Postdoc, 3 PhD students, 3 master students, 4 Bsc students, and 4 lab technicians in training. Moreover, she has attended a total of 11 courses related to innovative teaching methods and scientific dissemination skills and contributed in public events like European Researchers Night to raise awareness in general audiences about the importance of working with plants for a sustainable future of our society.

2022/05/18 - Current I participated in the scientific committee of the “International Fascination of Plant’s Day”, an international event launched by plant scientists across the world to raise awareness on plant biology and its importance for human societies. I designed a poster and created a stan about “Plant Reproduction”, with several scientific activities like microscope observation, pollen collection and a game to illustrate the pollination process for high school students.
