Born in 1957; graduated in Mechanical Engineering (Applied Thermodynamics; 1980) with Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (1996) from the University of Coimbra (UC). Professor in higher education (UC) since 1980; after retiring in Dec 2023, he is an Invited Associate Professor for free at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the UC. He is an integrated researcher of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI), which is one of the four partner and management institutions of the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aeronautics (LAETA) (LA nº 50022). He was a member of the Energy for Sustainability Initiative (EfS)-UC and the MIT-Portugal program. He has been a qualified expert (2008-2013) on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in the frame of the Portuguese regulation for the buildings' energy certification system. He integrated the task force for drawing up the national Technical Note NT-SCE-02 on the methodology for IAQ audits in buildings (2009). His research activity is mainly in the area of Thermal Engineering (e.g., numerical fluid flow modeling (CFD) with heat and mass transfer, including phase change materials (PCMs); aerodynamic sealing; indoor air quality and energy efficiency in buildings; thermal processes in the industry; etc.). He co-authored 7 chapters of international books, 82 publications in international scientific journals with referees, and over 100 articles in international conferences. He led/participated in several competitive-funded R&D projects; and coordinated 10 ADAI / UC specialized service contracts with the industry; co-supervised 45 master's theses and 9 doctoral theses (2 ongoing).
